Report Says the All-Electric Mustang Will Arrive in 2028

All-Electric Mustang

A new report suggests the next gen-Mustang will dump internal combustion for an all-electric drivetrain.

Back in March, the Blue Oval announced it would stick with the current Mustang platform until 2028. At the time, I speculated that a manual transmission might not be an option, and that an all-wheel-drive hybrid could be awesome.

But even given the great reception of the Mach-E, I honestly didn’t imagine the possibility that the iconic Pony Car could go completely electric. Now,  according to industry analysts AutoForecast Solutions, that seems to be the case. Here’s the relevant info, courtesy from our friends at Autoline Daily:

AutoForecast Solutions reports that the standard Mustang is going fully electric as well, and it sounds like that will be the only powertrain setup. It’s also important to note the next-gen Mustang will be made at Ford’s Flat Rock, Michigan plant — and to our knowledge, there hasn’t been any other single EV announced for that facility, so it’s going to take extra time to tool it up for electrics.

As expected, there’s no official word on this report from Ford. And given the magnitude of what an all-electric Mustang means for the enthusiast world, not to mention the general automotive landscape, I don’t expect one anytime soon. Plus, 2028 is seven long years away, and if 2020 taught us anything, it’s that everything can change in an instant. The world could look very different — in a million ways.

Obviously, when it comes time for the next-generation Mustang to debut, the Mach-E will have been in the wild for the better part of a decade. So we’ll have a much different picture about what a practical electric hotrod looks like in the real world. Plus, given how fast the technology is developing, and the fact that the hobbyist culture of tuning electric vehicles is still in relative infancy, the performance world could look radically different.

By then, perhaps the perception will be that internal combustion performance has truly run its course and that electric machines really are the only path forward. Quite honestly? I hope this is the case because, while it seems like a tremendous shift to happen in less than a decade, the Mustangs of today will be around for generations to come. Why shouldn’t we be excited to see what the future holds? You know the performance numbers will be epic!

So what do you think about the prospect of the Mustang going totally green? Hit me up and let me know!
