The Mustang Mach-E Will be a NYC Patrol Car
The initial order calls for 184 examples of the Mach-E GT, and caps what’s been a banner year for the Blue Oval’s electric crossover.
Back in September, the Michigan State Police evaluated the Mustang Mach-E to determine its potential use as a police vehicle. At the time, I was apparently only writer who joked about Ford’s electric crossover becoming the Mach-E 5.0, and so I felt very proud of myself. That said, the Michigan cops eventually approved the versatile green machine for duty, and as a result, their colleagues in New York City will soon be getting a new fleet of Mustang patrol vehicles.
Maybe more writers will make the five-oh joke now? Seriously. It’s hanging right there.
The NYC cops won’t be getting just any old Mach-E either, because like the Highway Patrol Mustangs of old, these Ponies will wear a GT badge. That means along with a full suite of police-specific computer and radio systems, the machines will have 480 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque on tap. In an environment as dense as the Big Apple, that should prove plenty poke, and the near-silent operation means any criminals better be on their toes. What a side benefit for a police car!
The initial order calls for 184 vehicles, the first of which should arrive in time for summer in the city. New York’s Department of Citywide Administrative Services said that in preparation for the electric additions to the city fleet, there have been 29 police-only and over 100 publicly available charging stations installed across the five boroughs. As NYC chief fleet officer Keith Kerman explains, the electric vehicles are part of a pivot toward sustainable tech:
Law enforcement vehicles are the largest and most visible part of our City’s fleet. This order of all-electric Mach-Es will enable our law enforcement agencies to put electric models to the full test and work out maintenance, lights and sirens, charging, and other operational issues. It is a critical step towards our goal of a fully electric fleet.
The contract with the New York City Police Department comes on the heels of a banner year for the Mach-E. The Blue Oval has already admitted it was blindsided by the demand for the electric crossover, and has tripled its production goals for 2023. That means a goal of 200,000 examples per year, or roughly four times the number of standard Mustangs it moved in 2021. Now, only time will tell if more city fleets will adopt the Mach-E. But don’t be surprised if you happen to see them in your neck of the woods in the not-too-distant future.
