This Shelby GT350 racer and its 72-year-old owner managed to shatter their own standing-mile record in dramatic fashion.

While we tend to focus on things like drag racing and circle track-focused motorsports, standing mile competitions are also quite popular these days. In that realm, you have events like the Texas Mile and the Arkansas Mile, which routinely attract thousands of spectators eager to see the insane speeds a select few folks can reach in that slightly longer distance. The results are typically mind-boggling – particularly when it comes to street-bodied machines like this Shelby GT350.

This Shelby GT350 is owned by Eddie Presnull, and it’s a truly impressive machine for a number of reasons. For starters, it’s the fastest street-bodied Mustang ever timed over a standing mile, anywhere, and it’s also a bit of an underdog. Competing against a field ripe with professional one-mile racers, the 72-year-old Presnull certainly had his work cut out for him this past October at the 2025 Arkansas Mile, but as we can see in this video, he still wound up exceeding expectations – by a lot.

Presnull and his crew managed to hit 271 miles-per-hour prior to last year’s outing, which was already pretty incredible, to say the least. That run took quite a physical toll on his Shelby GT350, however, and the team wound up rebuilding the entire car as a result. Rather than engage in any sort of testing, they simply headed back out to the tarmac to give it another run, too.

That came after a long 10-hour drive from Texas, at which point the Presnull crew was merely aiming to beat their own record and give them a little breathing room from any potential competition. These days, there’s a lot of that, too – in fact, right off the bat, he gets word that somebody hit 266 mph on their first run of the day, and they even deployed the parachute a bit prematurely, slowing it down before the finish line.

After facing some tire issues, Presnull failed to complete the mile on his next attempt thanks to some problems with the new traction control system. As such, the team opted to shut that off and give it one more go, hoping to post a solid result before making the long drive home.

That certainly did the trick, as Presnull and his Shelby GT350 wound up taking first place with a speed of 273,889 mph – a new record – though it did get a bit hot at the top end, as we can see at the conclusion of this clip!
