Triumph and Tragedy: Top Mustang Forums Stories of 2020
The next 12 months are certain to fun ones for Mustang fans, but before the new year starts, let’s take a look back.
When it comes to years, 2020 was less smoky burnout and more catastrophic engine fire. At this point, it looks like things are taking a turn for the better, and the next 12 months are slated to be exciting ones for fans of the Blue Oval’s legendary Pony car.
That said, while this was a terrible, awful, no-good stretch on the calendar, it was a period of time, and that means the editors here were working to deliver content. So on that note, let’s take a look at the most popular stories which ran on the Mustang Forums blog this year. There was some killer news, and quite frankly, one type of situation we hop we never have to report on again. See if you can guess which one that is…
Number 10: Fixing Fox Body Mustang Rough Idle Like a Champ
Dealing with rusty bolts and troubleshooting are some of the most frustrating aspects of the car hobby — and one of the best reasons to be a member of the forum. There’s a fantastic amount of knowledge here, as this post highlights. Even if your Fox Body is purring like a kitten, this is worth a look.
Number 9: Classic Mustang With Widebody Flares is White Hot
Adding modern styling elements to something as iconic as a 1960s Mustang can be a crapshoot. But wow, when it works? It really, really works. Everything about this build, from the flared fenders, to the blacked-out bumpers, to the bulging hood manages to look squeaky clean. That’s no small feat.
Number 8: Spy Shots of the 2021 Mustang Mach 1
Getting a sneak peak at upcoming high performance cars is one of the reasons the internet exists, right? So it shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone that spy shots of the forthcoming Mustang Mach 1 proved popular with the crowd here. Look for a full review next year.
Number 7: Ford Mustang II King Cobra a Star (Lord) at New Petersen Exhibit
Weapons-grade kit is all well and good. But as a student of automotive culture? I think stories about some of the industry’s “ugly ducklings” wind up making for some of the most compelling content. Personally, I think this King Cobra Mustang II’s hood looks way too Trans Am — but I love the color combo.
Number 6: Base to a Premium Gauge Cluster for $200
If you’re willing to turn your own wrenches, or do something even trickier, like taking apart your dash, enthusiasts know there are all kinds of ways to improve your ride on the cheap. Case in point is this killer gauge cluster upgrade, which was surprisingly affordable!
Number 5: Build It or Buy It: 2020 Shelby GT500
Speaking of mods, whether you should pay for upgrades from the factory, or just mix and match the bits you like best and install them yourself after the fact is one of longest standing questions in the hobby. In this post, we look at the GT500 from that perspective. Which approach would you take?
Number 4: Doomed Mustangs Get Second Shot at Life
Watching a classic car go from a bare shell to a fully functioning, tire-smoking machine is one of the great joys in life. So this post about an outfit which specializes in doing just that should be required reading for every Mustang fan. This is truly heartwarming stuff.
Number 3: 2021 Ford Mustang Colors Leaked to the Public
What’s your favorite color for the Mustang? Personally, I’m all about Grabber Blue, but that’s not to say I don’t appreciate all the colors in the rainbow — even if I think there should be a moratorium on producing cars in white, silver, or black. Seriously, there are enough of those already.
Number 2: Hello, Mach 1; Goodbye, GT350 & Bullitt
When I said that there was lots to look forward to for Mustang fans this year, I meant it. But that doesn’t mean I’m not bummed about losing the GT350. While it might have been a little down on power in comparison to the GT500, the sound of that flat-crank mill is something else, and the GT350R is still the Mustang I most want to own.
Number 1: ‘Eleanor’ Mustang Rights Holder Kills Epic YouTube Build
Ugh. If you’ve ever put your heart and soul into a project, or even if you have an ounce of empathy in your body, this terrible story about an “Eleanor” project getting confiscated from its rightful owners is going to sting. Read it and weep. And if you were thinking about putting your Gone in 60 Seconds build on YouTube? Think again…
