Vanilla Ice Still Rollin’ in His 5.0
At a recent Cars & Coffee event, the rapper unveiled his fully restored 1990 Fox Body Mustang 5.0 made famous from ‘Ice Ice Baby.’
The 1990s are back in a big way. From the fashion to television and movie reboots, the decade gave us plenty of fodder. Riding this wave of nostalgia, Vanilla Ice recently made quite a splash at the Cars & Coffee Palm Beach by officially unveiling his fully restored 1990 Mustang 5.0. The Fox Body Mustang drop-top was synonymous with the rapper–appearing in his Ice Ice Baby, and Rollin’ in My 5.0 videos (both embedded below).
The third-gen Mustang rolled off the line from 1978 to 1993. Ice, aka Robert Van Winkle, said it took 4 years and $150,000 to return the ’90 5.0 to its former glory.
At the well-attended event, he said this car was a part of pop culture. And he’s not wrong.
While Van Winkle is a car collector, he says “he’s never had an emotional connection to a car.” Until he saw the restored Mustang. With a sharp red and white interior, fixed up drop-top, and complete restoration; he couldn’t help himself. “When I saw this…I got emotional.”
A flood of memories came back to him about the car and its glory days.
“I remember drag racing down the streets in this car,” he recalled. “I remember having so much sub-woofer we had to tighten the license plate…the ’90s was the greatest decade ever!”
Exhibit A:
“It came out so nice I’m not going to be able to drive it,” he joked. “So, I’ve got to buy another I can actually burn rubber in.” It reminds us of that famous quote, “Zero to 60, 4 seconds don’t play, this ain’t no joke, and you can see the smoke, I’m burnin’ rubba’!”
Local news station WPEC was on hand for an up-close tour of the new, clean classic ‘Stang. A perfect ride for rolling with your rag top down so your hair can blow.
We have to say, the restoration is on point. Nicely executed, and retains the 5.0’s original spirit. The crowds went pretty crazy for this reveal, so many hearts were melted by this ice, ice, baby.
Vanilla Ice will continue rollin’ onto his next project, a show on The History Channel called Mystical Rides with Vanilla Ice.
