Default Functional Hood Scoops

I'm on a quest--for a new GT Convertible. I've been debating between a Shelby GT and regular GT with some "upgrades". The Ford Motorsport "power pack" seems to be a good deal to get virtually the same performance as a Shelby without all the $$$. I had hoped to buy this month, but may have to put off until later spring for $$$ considerations.....

My question--is there a "hood scoop" kit that makes the factory (or Shelby) hood scoops functional? I'm sure it would require cutting a hole in the hood, but does such a thing exist?

Thanks!

It can be done. Given enough time and money anything is posible. I am not aware of a kit that will do it for you. You need to see a fabricator. I'll say it before someone else does....the CDC Shaker hood will do it but you will have a bigger hole in your hood.

If you want the best performance avoid the "power pack". Get a CAI/tuner combo from one of the big vendors out there, see my sig.

For the hoods Cervini has a functional ram air But I'm not sure if these hoods really make a big difference in power. Supercharged applications can find enough air for a blower without a ram air hood.

Good point--I hadn't thought about that. If the supercharger can get enough air w/o a scoop then the performance gain would be marginal.

Also, I was looking primarily at the Ford Powerpack as it (when dealer installed) dovetails with the factory warranty....nice!

Thanks again!

Yep, the main advantages is the warranty and also CARB approval if you live in California. However, keep in mind that swapping intakes takes only about 15 minutes [8D] I originally bought the power pack but there's a big difference between the tune which comes with it and what you can get from other tuners.

Since the intake itself is made by Steeda, I later bought a tune from Brenspeed and that's what I'm running now. Also the programmer which comes with the FRPP kit is very limited, and doesn't allow you to make any adjustments for future mods.

"Ram Air" is a myth anyway. Do you know how fast you have to be going to actually create possitive pressure in the manifold. It's not likely to happen in aMustang! The hood is not exactly a high pressure area anyway. The only potential benefit to an open hood scoop (albeit a good one)is cooler air in the engine bay. The engine is going to suck in all the air it needs.

They will offer some benefit. You take a 3 qt, sauce pan, one that has about the same sq. inches as the open scoop on a CDC, and stick it out the window doing 75 mph. That is the force of air going into the scoop. It will diminish as tube restrictions take their toll, but it is at least something. Better than nothing.

You're not compairing apples to apples. Your saucepan analogy places the saucepaninto an area of high pressure, while most of the airflow for a hood scoop has already been broken by the front of the car, and is in fact, in an area of low pressure.Move theintaketo the center of the front grille and you start making a reasonable comparison to your saucepan analogy. The vacuum that the engine creates at the intake will greatly overwhelm any ram affect until you are going very, very fast. The speedneeded to create positive pressure varies depending on the intake size and shapeas well as the volume required to feed the engine. A large displacemnt V8 takes a lot of air, and you simply cannot drive aMustang that fast. I remember seeing a ram air test on a motorcycle a while back. This was a small displacement motor, anda very largeintake was mounted right in frontin an area of high pressure. They had to get the bike to speeds of 140+mph before the "ram effect" overcame engine vacuum. I'm not saying a hood scoop is totally non-functional, just that it would be more appropriatly called a cold airintake than a ram air intake. Any performance gain would likely be due to cooler air. If ram air were that easy, scramjet technology wouldconsist ofmore than just experimental military aircraft.

I didn't mean it would add 100 HP. But there is air flowing over the hood and it is moving so it will help.
