Default Best way to apply touch up paint?

Well after 3 and a half years, my soft as butter black paint has a few chips in it that I would like to touch up. I bought the ford touch up paint that has a pen on one side and a paintbrush on the other and I cant really seem to get this paint to look nice. Anyone have any tips on how to blend the paint into the car the best shy of sanding it flat?(because I may as well have the panel repainted if im going to do that)

The brush leaves lines in the paint and its not smooth but at the same time I cant get the pen to even work. I have been using a toothpick tip and dipping it into the paint and then applying to the car and that gives good results on small chips like 1cm wide but for the bigger ones I have had no sucess.

I bought a pack of assorted art paint brushes at Wal-Mart. The brushes are much softer and are not thick bristles like the type found on the touch up paint bottles. The assorted sizes allow for touch up of different sizes. Usually you are going to have to build up the paint in layers to match the level of the surrounding paint.

Layers. Lots of layers. Let the paint dry completely between each coat. You have to build the paint back up. Patients is the key.
