Hurst Shifter
Hi everyone,
I have been debating about getting a Hurst Short Throw shifter, but I have been reading that a lot of people dont like them or have complaints. Like the shift isn't as smooth or easy as the stock or there is a noise the shifter makes. If anyone out there has one I would love some feedback on the shifter.
Thanks!

the throw is easily 1/2 that of the OEM shifter
each gear has a certain "notchyness". You have to positively engage each gear. it doesn't just fall into gear like your current shifter does
had mine installed for about 1,500 miles now of the 2,996 total miles...my only complaint really is the slight buzzing noise I get at idle when she is idling at 1,200 rpm following a cold startup...once the idle drops back down it makes no noise. i've been to lazy to fix the noise with gun oil
as for dressing her up, I installed a "T" handle and couldn't be happier. the original white hurst handle just didn't cut the mustard. the brushed aluminum handle matches my interior perfectly...and is a great retro throwback

all said...I love my shifter. I will be going to a MGW later on, but for now the Hurst suits my purposes wonderfully. Especially as I only spent $80 for it slightly used.
if you are buying new, there is a new "billet" version. it seems they cured the Hurst Rattle with that one. The old version is still out there...and it's cheaper. But you are pretty much guaranteed to get some rattle. Luckily gun lube is cheap and usually fixes the rattle for a few months per application

the handle also sits a bit taller. it sounds stupid, but I can't change the radio stations with my index finger anymore. the OEM shifter was situated perfectly for me to do that without moving my hand.
on the other hand, I haven't screwed up a shift since I installed mine either. I ground 3rd gear a few times on the OEM shifter.had mine installed for about 1,500 miles now of the 2,996 total miles...my only complaint really is the slight buzzing noise I get at idle when she is idling at 1,200 rpm following a cold startup...once the idle drops back down it makes no noise. i've been to lazy to fix the noise with gun oil

I've had mine in for a week and have absolutely no rattles...unlike my plastic dash and heater vents.
I didn't like the tall handle and ended up having a UPR aluminum handle shortened. It's not as low as stock, but definetly better for me. Most guys like the tall (retro) shift ball location, but I didn't.
All in all I would say this is towards the top of my best mods list so far. It made the car so much more fun to drive.

Thanks Tylus, I know that it sits higher up then stock, and that was one of my main concerns with it also. I will probably be getting the original one for a classic look.
Thanks for the help!!
Thanks for the help!!
I got the billiet one installed a few weeks ago and LOVE it. I haven't messed up a shift since, especially going from 5th to 3rd to pass someone who is driving to slow and won't get out of my way, lol. I don't have any rattle issues though. I had it installed by a Ford tech at my local dealer who had installed a few dozen of the before. I put gun lube in the ball/socket area and had the tech use blue locktite on the screws that hold the handle to the ball socket. Plus it looks amazing!
shifter was one of my fav mods i had teh hurst billet and love it and now have the mgw and love that a little more cant really go wrong either way, unless you get that hurst socketball rattle that i had. but there is a fix for it now to just spray some lub in the socket ball area to stop and vibrations. good luck nothgin is better then a new shifter in our cars
