Default Blacking out emblems....

Guys, I want to black out the gas cap and pony on the grill. Do I need to prime the plastic or can I just paint it on? Also, do i need to sand the emblems to get the primer/paint to stick?

Any input, thanks.

I would say powdercoat them if you are willing to spend a bit of extra dough. That will ensure a quality finish that'll last

i did my rear cap and my side emblems and after 6 months not a problem with the paint! i sanded the chrome down, sprayed a bit of primer on, then about 5 or 6 coats of black spray paint from auto zone. then after that had dried i put 2 or 3 coats of clear coat spray paint on. i taped off the running pony so just the chrome has been blacked out. heres a pic

if u have any questions just pm me

What paint did you buy?
I bought Krylon and bought Kyrlon clear coat and the damn clear coat ATE the paint.
So I am now back to square one sanded it back down.
If you could tell me the brand of paint and primer and clear coat I'd really appreciate it!

I did the both GT emblems, rear cap and front pony. The pony I just taped off, all the other ones I took off the car first. Used the fishing line method. Sanded them down with some fine grit paper, then sprayed with some black paint for plastic from home depot. I did try some clear coat but it kinda turned the black sorta grey. So I sanded it off and sprayed black. Its been a year and they still look like new.

Did my 'GT' emblems, but not the rear gas cap.
Removed emblems, scuffed with a scotch-brite pad & sprayed with Krylon satin black. No clear coat. Has held up well for about 2yrs+ now.

Krylon is what I used at first.
Both paint and clear.

Their clear coat ate right through their paint.

I did the same as above: sand, primer, 5 coats of black, 3 coats of clear. Except I painted the entire cap. Don't forget to wipe the cap with some alcohol or something to ensure it's clean.
Did this when I painted the trunk panel, and before I got around to blacking out the tails.
