How Much HP are We Really Getting from Exhaust Systems?
I have a 2006 GT 5spd Man and from most of what I have seen. It looks like there is a solid gain with a CAI and tune. But not really that much in the exhaust?
How much HP are you guys actually seeing on the Dyno from X-Pipes, Headers, and Axle-Back systems anyway?
It seems that the stock system is pretty solid and has great flow. So most of the benefits of an aftermarket X-Pipe or headers are not going to be realized until you add a supercharger or another serious modification. Is this true? Are we talking about 2 HP for the axleback, 3HP for a solid X-Pipe, 3-7HP in the headers (short-Long tubes), and maybe another 3 in some high flow Cats? Wth some of this being cumulative and some not?
Are most people modifying the exhaust just for the sound and not so much for the power?
If I want HP and am happy with the sound, is there not better places to spend the money?
Thanks,
Skrappy

Cat/Axel back alone won't give you much, if any, hp gain until you get a supercharger or get over like 400hp or so. The only reason I did mine was for sound and better looking tips.

One of my really good friends owns a sticker company and knows alot of people when it comes to the aftermarket business. He was talking with the owner of bassani and there is no difference between the stock and bassani axle back. Maybe 1 or 2 horse if you lucky but it's all just for sound. If you swap out the stock headers for some l/t headers with an o/r mid-pipe, your looking at about a 30 rwhp gain. And of course the wonderful sound that goes along with it.
Hey Scrappy!
MM&FF tested 5 SHORTY headers on a slightly modified 05 and the results were less than enthusiastic. The brand that made the most HP was JBA with only a 5hp, second best was Ford Racing with 4hp. The other brands made between 3-4hp. Some other sources (can't remember) have reported a "whopping" +8hp w/BBK shorty headers.
That's $400-$750 for less than 10hp increase. [:'(] In my opinion, two things come out of the test: a.) the stock system is pretty good (much better than previous generations, which would see greater gains by swapping in shortys) and b.) your money is much better spent elsewhere if performance (as opposed to sound preference) is what you're after.
Long tube headers are another story. Reports are that you can see a solid 20-25hp increase. You decide if the cost is worth the increase. Of course, if you're going with other power upgrades (n/a or forced induction), then the need for higher flowing pipes becomes more critical.

I have to agree with Mike, I might believe 20HP at the crank with long tube headers AND eliminating the Cats as well with a fairly open system behind it... I might... If I saw it... Maybe if you already had a supercharger on it?
That just seems like an awful lot to get. The stock system just seems too good for the difference to be that great?

i have a C&L intake, MAC axle-backs and a custom tune. 286hp on the dyno. most of the gains from the C&L; MAC axle-backs for look and sound.
I bought mine for the sound. There isn't really any increase in horsepower, but it sure sounds like there is.[sm=smiley20.gif]. Most exhausts systems are pretty expensive, so there are probaly a lot of mods you could buy instead for hp.
