Caliper Question? Painted??
Ok looking at the nice new shiny brake calipers they appear to have a silver paint/coating on them but I am not certain. Does anyone know if these calipers are already painted? I planned on painting mine this weekend and would like to know if I am going to have to strip them down first or what. I recall that wehn my f150 was new they looked the same way and of course now look like crap and will also be getting a paint job soon.
Thanks,
Richard

The new paint will adhere nicely, as long as, the surface is clean, and that nasty brake dust is off of there. Use a solvent like spray on, and make sure it is completely off before painting. I'm not sure what color you want to use, but, you could be limited.
We use "grill enamel" (black) on our race cars, because this is a high temp paint, and it won't bake-off, when the caliper housing heats up. I have seen this type paint in like a charcoal grey, and white also.
A shelf type paint will give you more color options, and may not bake-off in street applications, I'm not sure though.

They look painted to me; I've never seen a metal with that "silvery" of a finish. You could dab a small dot of paint remover in an inconspicuous place and you'll know for sure. I hated this cheap looking silver and I painted mine dark grey cast in VHT high temp, the night I got the car home from the dealer. No bright color on calipers for me; I'm more "old school: and I don't like to distract from the rims. ...that's just me. ..got enough color going already on the body paint scheme :-)
See what the paint mfg says about prep before you strip them. I masked mine off and sprayed them all in a half hour and they show no signs of discoloration, etc. ...just my suggestion; do what makes you happy!!!

I agree Fairlane, the paint will go right over that "silvery" finish, with out removing it first. The "grill paint" does a super nice job for less $$$ than the VHT. (probably the same stuff)
I bought a kit & did mine, that was about 6 months ago and they still look fine (when they're clean.) I like the look and I get a lot of compliments on it. It was a pain in the a** getting the wheels off and getting the car up on jackstands, but after that it went smoothly.

Possible, maybe someone can try the paint remover "spot test" and tell us. ..just looks to light colored and kinda shiny to be a casting but anythings possible; hopefully we'll see someone test it.
Make sure you prime first! Look here
