Ok I know I saw this question before but I don't remember the outcome. I have a 1,000 mi on my car and just started to notice a slight whineing noise when I let off the gas. I'm thinking it might becoming from the rear. Maybe rear-end? or trany? not sure. I have an auto if that matters. Any help will be appreaciated. Thanks in advance Bruce

I to have noticed a whining noise from the rear end of the car when I’m on the freeway going approximately 50 to 60mi. an hour. It happens when I just barely accelerate to keep the car at a constant speed. It seems to be louder when I’m pressing the accelerator very lightly and then subsides when I lift my foot off the accelerator.

your significant other had a team of specialists come in and install a supercharger on your car overnight. Be happy! loll jk

Most likely it's just the way of the universe. Stronger means noisier. There's the off chance that it is a problem, but I'd bet money your just hearing the durability.

ford has an issue with the entire drivetrain making noise on these cars. i recall some guys having to replace driveshafts, trans mount and rear diff assy's. i have the same problem after i changed gears. i've had the rear apart 3 times and replaced the gears again but have the same problem still. some say that theirs gets better with more mileage on the new gears but mine is getting worse. my stock gear made zero noise even with the aluminum driveshaft.
i talked to the ford racing techs on tuesday and they told me that 3.31,3.55,3.73 were the worst ratios for making noise due to the tooth count and pitch of the teeth. that is why the new frpp gears have a different pitch and backcut ring gears. i also talked to the guys at JPC and they told me that despite the measurments they(05-upGT) use much less shim on the pinion than other 8.8's do especially in autos.
my guesss is that it's your gears and the best advise i can give for you is to buy a set of frpp 3.73's 4.10's 4.30's and go to the dealer and have them install under the warranty. they won't warranty the new gears but at least you can get the install of the new lower gears for free since they have to trash your stockers anyway. hoefully then you can get rid of the whine and step up in gear at the same time.

i'v heard of this before, guys said taht if you have certain gears they will whine and make noise, but the FRPP ones dont, even though they cost more---

If it only happens when you let off the gas most likely it is the ring/pinion gears. Take it in to Ford and don't let them tell you all Mustangs have rear end noise. The ring and pinion was not set up correctly at the factory. I had the same issue and they replaced them.

I've worked as an automotive engineer for over 15 years on drivetrain in Detroit. Most of my experience is in front & rear axles. I designed & released the F-body (camaro & firebird) axle back in 93'.

Anyways, what you have (by your description) is what they call "coast side" ring & pinion noise. Not a big deal mechanically, but it can become very irritating to the ear. You need the dealership to re-shim the ring & pinion in your rear axle or have them put in a new set & shim correctly. The ring & pinions are lapped as a set and shimmed to a proper backlash. Yours was not done correctly at the factory in Sterling Heights, MI.

Tell the dealer to fix it. It's a common problem in axle manufacturing. The dealer will know about exactly what I've written here. They have seen your problem a hundred times I'm sure......
