RE: Whats the width of stock 18 inch polished
I am thinking of upgrading to a 255-45-18 myself
Actually, narrow tires on wide wheels makes for a sharper handling car. If you look at any E46 M3. The tires look small for the wheels. That is done purposly for handling.

Best bet is to go to tire mfg sites as they show rim width range for each tire size. Once you have the specific tire mfg chart in front of you it's pretty easy to select the tire you want. You'll be able to see the diameter or Revs per mile which you can compare to OE to know the difference in height (diameter) you are talking about with any selection. I would but w/o studying/comparing mfg charts. They all have them and if not available online they will fax or send them to you. Generally all mfg are about the same on width and diameter per tire size; you'll see this when you get a couple charts in front of you. ...Jim

255s is the biggest you should go with a 18x8.5. As stated above, you can squeeze a larger tire on there, but not advisable. I'm running 18x8.5 255/45 upfront and 18x9.5 285/40 out back...
