eventually i will be upgrading the whole sound system from this car, but for now i'm either going to do speakers or head unit. which would be more beneficial to sound quality?

Speakers. Real 6X8's in the doors and back. Leave the subs alone until you get a new head unit.

I would start with the HU then work your way to the speakers. These speakers really come to life when you replace just the HU. That is if you have any of the Shaker systems.

What are the sizes of the door speakers? 6x8? Any suggestions on good replacements?
