Don't assume the difference in weight was due to the trannies. A bone stock '05 auto could well weigh less than a '06 manual with options.

I agree, an auto is almost always heavier than its counterpart and I agree about the options part. However, I am vaguely remembering something about the article that is causing me to think this is out of the norm case (but yes, I could be wrong as I read this on a flight back from Boston after a very long meeting).. In either case, both the auto and manual version of this car are fat! I would never have thought that they would have made these this heavy, but I guess its for a reason.
Like I said, I'll see if I can find the magazine and see what it has to say. If I find it, I'll let you know
