Every 3k or 5K?
i just hit a 1000 miles should i have them change the oil to get the original crap out of the filter that got cycled through the engine in the beginning miles
which filter is the best if i get one...mobil one? kandn? or just motorcraft
thanx

I change it every 5k on the Mustang and 3k on my Cavalier. But I used to change it every 10k on my van and Corvette. Sold the van at 230k miles and the Vette at 190k. Neither one burned more than 1 quart between oil changes. So the whole oil change debate holds no interest for me. Change it with whatever brand and interval that will make you feel comfortable.
There was a study done on NYC cabs and police cars using multiple brands and intervals, the pulled all the engines at 200k to compare wear and damage and found that there were very little difference between any of them. If I can find the study I'll link it.

That's a very good study. However, one important thing to consider is that this comparison was mainly between conventional oils. The only true synthetic in the group was Mobil 1 (and they did note it's superior low-temp flow characteristics), and there were a couple semi-synthetics in there too. Note that they did NOT try any of the "premium" oils such as Red Line or Royal Purple.
The only valid conclusion that I would draw from this experiment would be that most conventional ("Dino juice") oils have very similar, possibly identical, performance as far as preventing engine wear is concerned. That's important because they have shown that the cheap oil brands work as well as name brands like Mobil and Penzoil, etc--at least as far as wear is concerned.
However, due to the limited nature of their experiment you cannot make the overall conclusion that one brand is just as good as another brand period. There are various factors they did not test.
They did not evaluate such things as pumping losses of the various oils (in other words, how much HP they "steal" from the motor when being pumped around), the resistance to carbon formation under extreme temperatures, (for example, coking resistance in a turbocharger) and so on.
