Default HU REPLACEMENT

Hi to all...new to this forum....

I have an '06 Coupe with a Shaker 500.
I just picked up a new Kenwood HU that is Satellite Radio compatible (for my sirius) along with the Sirius unit that goes with it.

I have never opened up this console, so before I screw up my favorite Mustang of all time (I've had everything since 1965), can anyone please point me to specific instructions on how to open up the console, what tools I might need to do it without breaking things, and maybe some pics on the procedure (a pic is worth a thousand nicks & scratches!).

Also, any advice/insight on the install would be appreciated, especially concerning the harness, the subs, etc.
I am going to place the Sirius antenna on the front dash, as that seems to work well with my portable Starmate. I just want to avoid having that mouse/antenna glues to the top of the car I don't like the look. I won't even mount my EZ PASS on the windshield!

Thanks in advance!

Sirius SIR-KEN1Kenwood KDC-MP2035I chose this model because it also has a front face jack for the wife's Ipod.

Royce,
First, welcome to the forum. Lots of good info and people.....The search function is your friend, as there is a ton of info on this subject.....

Here is a link that will help you out with lots of info on this, and other projects...

http://www.2005stang.com/viewtopic.php?t=1087

When you go to the search function, do a search on 5 volt voltage regulator....Very important stuff so you don't get a loud pop every time you turn on the new HU.....

As far as the satellite antenna, several of us have mounted it in the back window deck, right behind the seat. No reception problems, nice clean install.....

Welcome again, and best of luck with your project.

Mike

I must be confused. You're taking out a Shaker 500 and putting in a $129.00 CD player w/ 4 channels x 22 watts?

The new HU has sat radio capibilities and it will sound clearer than the shaker is. 4x22 is just as much if notmore power than the shaker has. He will still have the subs also. He loses the 6 disc capability but other than that I can't say there is a downside.

Thanks for all the great info!

Yes, I am taking out the Shaker 500. While I think it sounds pretty good (not fabulous, but pretty good and I am in a CAR, not a Concert Hall), the direct compatibility with Sirius AND the input on the face for the Ipod make all the difference.

As for the power factor, less but cleaner power will always sound better than more but degraded power. It's the Law of PychoAcoustics.

Now, back the matter at hand....

Just to be sure...

When I connect the new HU that [supposedly] has the proper interface cables, the subs should just come right up without me doing anything special...right?

Tell me more about this 5V & popping issue please, as this is the first I have heard of this.

I will also take the advice and run the antenna to the rear deck...a much cleaner install.
Should I be running the antenna under the floor console top plate or should I also remove the floor console and go under that to get to the rear deck?

Wil l it be obvious to me as to where to place/mount the Sirius Receiver (SIR-KEN1) when I remove the Shaker?

Any special clips or releases I need to know about to remove the Shift Bezel or the 2 Center Stack Wings?

Will I get all the proper connectors to complete this swap or will I need to splice/make-up/buy connectors-adapters-splitters of any kind?

Sorry for all the specific questions but there is no point in me re-inventing this wheel if others have come before me and already perfected the procedure. I'm not doing this for the adventure! I already get into plenty of mischief around the house.
Thanks again!

You have to get the correct wiring harnesses. Crutchfield sells all the wiring you need. For the popping issue. I inserted a resistor between the wiring from the HU and the amp to the subs. You can do a search and find the thread on the AVIC Z1 install. Its about 5 pages long but tells you all you need to know about the regulator from radio shack.

I will also take the advice and run the antenna to the rear deck...a much cleaner install.

You might be able to just mount it with the plate under the dash. I know some people did but I just have mine in the rear deck right under the window. I ran the ant. under the baseboard of the door and then back up the pillar and then under the read deck molding. It was not the easiest but it is pretty clean. All you see is the small little box at the end of it.

Depends on your mounting bracket. But you have to unscrew 4 screws for the shaker removal and you will have to use them to put the new unit it.You might be able to put the sirius receiver under the HU.

This depends on where you buy the harness from. Generally yes.

Royce- in order for your new HU to turn on the factory sub amps you need to connect the turn-on lead from the HU to the connector on the new wiring harness. The difference is the factory system puts out 5v as opposed to the 12v your new HU puts out - the voltage regulator just takes the 12v down to 5v. You wont cause issues with the amps - but the pop is very annoying. The regulator is easy to hook up and is only 3 wires - a ground, 12v input from the new HU and a 5v output to the wiring harness.

I have a vert so I put the antenna on the dash - wire is hidden between the top of the dash and the bottom of the windshield and the antenna is centered under the label so it's barely visible. Reception is fine through the glass so either method appears to be fine. To mount your satellite receiver you will have plenty of room near the radio which you'll see once you have the center panel removed. You can use velcro to mount the receiver to the new HU since the HU is mounted securely using the install kit.

I assume you're using an install kit and an install harness - both can be found at Crutchfield or potentially your local stereo shop. The harness is 2 pieces - one for the main power and speaker output and then another harness which is for the shaker connector - has the amp turn on and RCA cables to connect up to your new HU. I've included a picture of the harness.

Royce,
Didn't mean to bail out of the thread earlier today, but I have been out all day, and just getting caught up. Obviously others have chimed in with the answers you were looking for. In addition, here is a link to a thread that actually shows the integration of the voltage regulator that has been mentioned. Yes, I know this is referring to 2006 Ford Escape, but it's the same thing. This also shows the harnessess that other have referred to, easily available at Crutchfield.

http://www.dennisjudd.com/archives/000947.html

The only thing I did different with the voltage regulator was, I did not hook up the ground wire from the Voltage Regulator to the harness. Instead, when I removed the Shaker 500, there is a bracket that runs right behind where the Shaker was installed. I drilled a very small hole in that bracket, and screwed the voltage regulator to that bracket. This acts as both a ground, and a heatsink for the regulator. (Thanks again Blue!!!)

Can't speak to the placement of the Sirius black box, as my Alpine has XM, and it is integrated into the head unit..(no external additional box..)

Here is a pic of the final placement of my XM antenna. I ran the antenna wire around the passenger footwell, under the door sill, and behind the rear seat, up to the center of the rear deck...

Mike

Once again, thanks to all.

I have reviewed all of the posts (and the links) and I am almost ready to go in.
I just need to go to R. Shack for the transistor, assemble all my tools, wait for a day with temps above freezing, open up the new radio stuff and organize it all...EASY!

I may seem a bit **** about this, but at 53 years old, getting caught with my center console guts hanging out and not having what is needed has gotten pretty old...been there, done that.

HOMEWORK PAYS OFF.

I will take pics of the process for those who come after me.
Oh, good, now I have to add the camera to the growing list of things to bring out to the car!

Let's see:
New Radio
New Sirius Box
All associated wiring harnesses
Transistor
Tools
Camera
Water Bottle
Snacks
Cellphone
Flashlight (I expect to be out there 'til night fall)
Girl (that was the whole point of getting a Mustang, right?)
2nd Girl (for after the the first one leaves because your Mustang, which got you the girl in the first place, doesn't have a working radio!...instant loss of girl)
3rd Girl (for after the 2nd girl leaves after you explain to her that you DON'T have a convertible because of the rattling noise and the cold winters in NY...but she doesn't buy it and leaves for another guy WITH a convertible....maybe should have gotten that convertible! But it's WINTER & 28 degrees! She still isn't buying it.)
4th Girl (spare)

I think I have a working plan.

While I'm waiting for the wiring harness to arrive from Crutchfield, I have realized that the new HU is about 1/2 the size of the Shaker 500.

Can anyone make a suggestion as to what I should buy (and where) to fill in the space below the new HU?
