Default Air intake kits

Hi everyone, I have been looking at air intake kits to increase HP on my new Stang. I ran across theMMR(Modular Mustang Racing) site, and was looking at thier MMR Annihilator intake kits for the V8. After reading the description of the claimed(up to)35 RWHP, I was impressed with the $199 price tag, but right below that was another Annihilator intake kit W/High flow intake tube for $319.99. While the description was basically the same with 35 RWHP also, the only difference was the "High flow intake tube". I emailed the site contact, and the only reply was the added cost was for the High Flow intake tube. Since there seems to be no added increase in HP between the two, why should I buy the higher priced unit? Did I miss something? Has anyone installed this unit on thier car, or can you recommend another? They claim 5 more HP over K&N which is why I was checking it out.
Thanks for your help.
..Lance

First of all welcome to the site. Secondly, before you get burned at the stake for not using the search feature at the top of the page, let me suggest that you use the search for "CAI" as this has been discussed a million times. My suggestion is a C&L cold air intake and tune from brenspeed.com Great gains (about 25rwhp) which is about the most you'll get out of ANY intake and tune. hope this helps and again...welcome.

jay0heavenly: I'm thinking about the same setup that you have. Question about going to a 93 octane tune. My car is a low mileage non-daily-driver so the extra .30 -.40 per gal of gas doesn't mean that much. From your experience, can you comment on the difference going from an 87 to a 93 tune. Thanks

^^^honestly, its really nothing I could feel. when I first put in the tune it was a 87 tune and it was bananas! Then I switched it to 93 and I really didn't feel a difference. I'm sure it is, and I didn't drive it around a lot with the 87 tune, but IMO you'll be VERY happy with the C&L and 87 tune. The first time I drove it, I had the grinch smile on my face and I was making up excuses to drive it around. I'm sure there is a difference on the dyno, but I didn't feel anything. I'm gonna switch it this week when I change gas and I'll repost if I feel any difference, but I doubt I will.

Opps! sorry about that. Thanks for the info. Seems like it's not worth the money for the insignificant gain without a tune or other mods.

I dont have the conventional set up i have the Granatelli CAI with the brenspeed 93 octane tune... if you want a good cai with tune

Go with
C&L w/ Brenspeed Tune or
JLT w/ B A M A chips tune

Both top quality

Whitestallion; I'm super happy with my granatelli cai with no tune (burning that good ole regular). Did you notice a substantial performance improvement by going with the tune?

I wouldnt go with anything other than the more popular intakes (C&L, JLTII, WMS). JMO, but they are the ones that have been proven to have to best gains and the least problems... We have some good vendors here that will hook you up nicely, Brent @ Brenspeed is awesome, and I hear the same about Fred @ Evo.

Fairlane, I know my 93 tune from Brent has alot more aggressive shift points than my 87. It also feels like it pulls a little stronger off the line as well as up to about 3k, then its pretty much the same. Also if I step on it while im goin slow I notice the 93 tune responds a little faster, so Im not sure if the throttle response is better or whether that has to do with the shift points. Then again, Im in an auto so Im not sure what that really means since youre 5s.

Sandy: actually i ordered my granatelli cai and it took awhile to get in and while i was waiting i read how good the tunes were so i ordered the tune and i act never drove it with just the GMS cai I never used the new MAF... but i read a lot of people who had the GMS and then went to a tune and the GMS is great , it wakes the car up but if you want to get the full effect get the tune the car is louders and shifts faster (auto) throttle lag is almost non exsistant and its like driving and entirely new car.

The bottom line in my opinion is you have to get a tune to really get the HP gains you are looking for. You are not going to see 25-28 HP with a CAI and a stock SCT or Predator tune. You will have to have a custom tune at least from either Brenspeed, B amachips, or Evolution. You won't be dissappointed with either of these guys. As for the cais themselves, C&L and JLT are very popular and I nelieve each of the vendors sell them.
