Default When Should I Wax?

So this is the 1st brand new car I've had. All my others were a couple years old so I waxed right away. What is the rule of thumb with new cars? Do you wax after 6 months? 1 year? Or should you wax right away??

I wax it a lot... Adam's and Optimum products are doing it for me right now. There are many good polymer-based waxes out today that will not damage your finish.. no matter how often you use them.

I would wax it as soon as the weather permits.. and do it as often as you'd like. I would not wax less than every 6 months though... But it really depends on what the car is exposed to.

I started doing mine within 1000 miles. I normally wax every spring and fall. Since I keep it in a garage, it easily lasts that long. Did anyone else notice crappy paint on their stang? I started with the hood and noticed it still felt rough after I took the wax off, it didn't have that smooth-as-glass feel. After I used a clay bar it felt great. I could see small specs of something all over the paint. Dunno if the truck ran through something or if it sat for a while on a factory lot for a month or two. I bought it in November, it was built in August, and arrived at the dealer's lot 2 weeks before I bought it, so who knows what happened in those couple months. I'd recommend spending the $10 on a clay bar and going over at least the top of the car (hood, roof, trunk lid, and top sides of fenders and quarters) before waxing. You'll love the results.

Answer: You don't need to wait. Dealer has probably already waxed it; who knows what they used and how they did it. Hopefully they just washed your car and didn't marr or scratch it when doing that.

You can start on your new car as soon as you want.

Consider using a claybar to clean off the surface contaminants that have already accumulated on your car.

Get with forum member Juzstang for some quality sealants.
If you have to buy OTC, consider the Meguiars line of products with a polymer base. The new sealants have greater durability and longevity than the old "waxes".

Best of luck and show us some pics.

Meguires 27 High Tech Yellow wax. Lasts forever, looks great, and excess dries clear.

Just make sure the temperature is above 50 degrees or you'll be wasting your time.

I'd comound the car first, with a light compound meant for clearcoats. Strip that off, then use the claybar to make sure it's really clean, then use something like Turtlewax Platinum Paste wax, and use the sponge applicator that comes with it to apply it, then use Diaper or Finishing cloths to strip it off. Use the wax like 3 times, and you'll have a great deep finish. I'd say to compound the car first like I mentioned, because this will help to get rid of the "Orange Peel" in the clearcoat (Ford Actually does this on purpose by adding excess clearcoat to the car to protect it until it gets waxed by the owner).

I'd use the Turtlewax Platinum Paste in light skim coats, and you can pretty much apply it as often as you like. Then use something like the Turtlewax ICE liquid wax as an in-between detailer. I've done all of this stuff (except the compunding and claybar...waiting until spring), and it gives me a Pianoblack finish on my car...

Hope this helps
