Can someone explain IRS vs Live Axle?
This might have been talked about here and probably could be found throughGooglebut I rather read it from Mustang Forum people. What are the pros and cons? Thanks.
The short story:
Live axle/solid axle is when the car just has one solid axle in the back upon which the car can articulate over bumps etc. The down side is that because the left and right sides are connected, any bumps you hit on one side will affect the other side of the car even though that side of the road can be smooth. The upside is it is cheaper to make and often better for drag racing as it puts the power to the road better.
IRS : means independent rear suspension and basically both sides are free to articulate without impacting the other side. This allows for a much better ride an better handling. The downside is it is more expensive and a lot of cars with IRS have horrible wheel hop so not as good for drag racing (in general).
