Default 4.10 gear install

Hey everyone. I'm looking to have someone install 4.10 gears in my 07 GT. I know nothing about gears or how they are installed but I have heard about people having issues when they aren't done correctly. I'm asking my local ford shop if they do gear changes but I was wondering if there are any things I should ask about/issues that can arise from a poor install? Are there questions I can ask to see if they really know what they are talking about? Thanks for the help!

What should I expect to pay for an install? What can I ask to be sure they know what they are doing?

Well I don't know what you should ask. But people here have been quoted $900+ for labor at a dealer...[sm=jawdrop.gif]

I paid $350 for the installation of my 4.10's (which included installing a t-lock). I've seen someprices that were a bit lower, and some that were higher.

$175 - $325 quoted here, I found the most experienced installers work at 4WD truck shops cause when guys put the monster tires on they need to change the gears to turn the bigger wheels, they are also used to doing two at a time cause of the the 2nd diff in the front, those guys see more gear changes in one year than most dealer techs see in a lifetime, the 8.8" rear is also in many Ford Trucks.

I paid $300 for my install. I provided everything but the fluid.

The 4.10 FRPP "A" gears are the easiest to install because they use the same clearances as the stock gear set. This means they are also the easiest to get right (e.g. they won't whine). I used those gears and got an experienced installer and there is zero noise from the rear.

Any helical cut gear will not whine if installed properly but some of the best installers can struggle with that from time to time. When selecting an installer be very clear on what the warranty terms are.

Best of luck. The mod is definitely worth it!
