Default Cobra IR

Well I will be geting delivery of my mustang in a few weeks. Dont get me wrong I like a solid rear but I like an independent one more. Will a cobra rear axle bolt on a s197 mustang? Id like to get an independent rear for corner huging and posibly improve ride quality.

Also where could I get a new axle from? well if it fits anyway. Or are there other manufacturers that are making these axles? Id like to keep my stock gearing as well to maintain streatability.

Any sugestions?

Wow your talking big bucks for something that is gonna make you car heavier. My cousin has a 03 cobra i drive it all the time, I really dont think it drives any better than our solid rear. As far as handiling i dont push my car or his that hard

If you're that concerned about handling. I think you should look into an EVO or an STi...

I'd have to research it but there is a company out there that manufactures an IRS for the S197 and they said their axles are rated to 1000hp. But if a solid rear is good enough to beat M3s and porsches on the track it should be plenty good for the street. Just might ride a lil rougher.

so whos the manufacturer of these axles. IF a mustang is good with a solid rear then a new driveshaft and a independent rear will make it a hell of alot better.

+1...Sport Compact Car took a stock Ford Focus out to the skidpad and found it outperformed a stock Cobra. Not exactly a Mustang shining moment...

I think, though, that the first major upgrade for my Mustang's going to be the suspension kit that Saleen is coming out with, that mimics the Parnelli Jones Edition.

You may want to consider the Parnelli Jones Watts link set up by Saleen. They will be selling that soon. It retains the solid rear axle but is supposedly superior than the 3 link Saleen upgrade.

Wheel hop FTW!

Id pick the PJ Watts setup over some massively heavy and overly expensive IRS. JMO though.
