Question about 4.0 SOHC engine
The heads and other internal parts are probably different between the 2, and the v6 Mustang is supposed to be a gas saver, as where Ford dont give a sh*t about its Rangers gas mileage.
Ranger is probably heavier and geared lower. Plus it could have a cam designed for low end torque. (for loads & towing) Few things could be in play. I like the mpg with my 4.0, it's 30+mpg/highway now with the JBA axleback.
There are some differences between the Ranger 4.0 and our 4.0 - My grandfather has a '97 4.0 and the UIM(plenum) is completely different. We're soon to replace the intake manifold gasket so I can see how many difference there are deeper down but I'm sure there are quite a few. Not to mention the ranger is probably geared differently as well.

Why does the 4.0 Mustang get so much better gas mileage than the 4.0 Ranger?
