Default Which tire size would work better ?

Im looking to move to staggered set up. I currently have 18x8.5 with 235/50/18s all around. I want to keep the fronts at 18x8.5 but change the rears to 18x9.5. I was told that if I keep the fronts with the current tire size I should ideally move to a 285/40 for the 18x9.5 in the rears. Ive also been told to change the fronts to 255/45 if I do 285/40 in the rear to keep it the same. Im confused, somebody help me understand this, thanks !

Thanks for the reply ! But since Im moving to 18x9.5 I would have to use a bigger tire right ? Could I use a 275/40 (rears)to match up against 255/45 (fronts)? I want to change the front tires too and get the tires that have the rim guards on them. Or is that worth it ? Thanks again

I dont see the need to change the fronts if your keeping an 18 x 8.5 rim. Unless you want to keep all 4 tires the same brand and model. If so I'd suggest 255/45/18 front and 285/40/18 rear. It'll keep both tires around 27" diameter and within 1% of stock.

any real advantage between a 275 and 285 ? It seems the tire prices for the 275s are better

I was looking on Tire Rack last night for new tires. I was looking for tires for my 18 X 8.5 wheels. I punched in my current tires 235/50/18 and it gave me an optional tire choice and size. When I clicked on the optional size it read...255/45/18 Front and 285/40/18 rear. It also showed the change difference in the speedo...very cool. However, I did not think you should go that big (285/40/18) on a 18 X 8.5 wheel. If that is the case, I will forgo buying 4 new wheels to get the look I want.

I suggested the 285 to keep the diameter close to stock and to the fronts. the obvious advantage (small) is the more tread to the pavement. If your gonna add any power this could be a bigger advantage in the future.
