Completely hypothetical suspension question
We all know that you can't drive a RWD Mustang like you would drive a FWD Civic. There are a lot of factors involved - tires, weight distribution, power output, which wheel (or wheels) are receiving power, etc.
But, all things being equal, how would swapping out the "live axle" for independent rear suspension make a difference?
Lots of people dis the Mustang for it's live axle, and maybe some of the reason why it still has one is because of the R&D Ford would need to stick into an IRS. But, I believe there are other reasons, and it's a compromise, based on what Ford thinsk we consumers will be doing with our Stangs.
Ford has experimented with IRS on Mustangs, but we still have the live axle - almost like they tried it, but found the "old way" is better in this case.
Since these forums are full of people who understand suspensions far better than I do, I'm curious if anyone can explain the advantages and disadvantages. Anyone????

I honestly think Ford put a live axle in to save money.. much like our cheap plastic mirrors, etc. Of course, they're not stupid or anything, they know this is a muscle car and handling is an afterthought for most people.
