Default Rear Window Rainbow

Has anyone seen this problem on their cars yet? I haven't even tinted the rear window yet and it appears to have the rainbow discoloration. I've had it about 2 years now and was getting ready to tint the windows, but if I do it now it'll probably look like crap. Just wanted to see if this was a fluke. Thanks!

I have noticed the same thing, particularly when I'm wearing polarized sun glasses. I assumed this was normal as I noticed it on other vehicles. Hmmmmmmm......

Man....I thought something totally different when reading the thread title.

Rainbow discoloration of the glass is just oil residue.....use goo gone or goof off.

hahah me too... but on the rear window it could be the plastic between the two pieces of glass that is getting discolored. if im not mistaken the way the rear window is made is two pieces of glass with a piece of plastic ( where those wires are hidden in) is between those two pieces of glass. so i bet u that plastic is goin bad.

I thought this was just me! I notice this depending on the light but very clearly when wearing polarized sunglasses. I have 3-4 "streaks" in the back window (vert). Like you said, I notice it on other cars so I guess it is normal to some extent - not "streaks" though. I see "spots" that are probably part of the glass on newer cars. They are not very visible without the glasses.

I had a new 06 coupe that had these streaks visible in certain light. I took it to the dealer (noticed it when I got home) and they said they could see them too. They actually had the warranty person look at them and they said they could replace the rear window but there was no guarantee that the new one would not have the streaks. They took me around and showed me some other cars on the lot that had them - not all though - I guess it must just be a common defect. I did not feel like having the rear window replaced on a new car so I asked them to tint it very lightly. After the light tint, it was no longer visible. (btw - they told me to use Bon Ami on it but that did not work...)

Don't know if this is the same thing as the "rainbow" problem though...

It would be interesting to hear from other members to see how many have this issue - remember - it is only visible in some light conditions or with polarized glasses on "non-tinted" rear windows.

Best of luck...

I'd bet that you're wearing polarized glasses when you see that!
I got my back 3 windows tinted, so never noticed factory tint breakup there, like I can see in the rear windows of many BMW's.
But after I got my new polarized glasses I started noticing the tint spots in my doors' windows.
Guess it's time for tint... and moleskin!

Glad it's not just me. Your right (several people who have pointed this out), I generally don't wear sunglasses but just got new clip on's and it jumped right out at me. Just hope it doesn't get much worse. =)

the way the rear window is made is two pieces of glass with a piece of plastic ( where those wires are hidden in) is between those two pieces of glass.
The "wires" are surface mounted not inbetween the two pieces of glass
in the plastic. The service manual shows repairing them and it does not
entail pulling the glass apart. They are on the inside surface and it warns
of using razorblades to clean anything off of the rear glass.

Yeah, I noticed that today when I was checking the glass. I was hopeful that they were between just so tinting the rear would be easier. I HATE tinting over rear defoggers. =(
