A friend of mine was riding in my car the other day and asked if i got on it some.. I said yep i sure do..

he said "Do you worry about getting in an accident and having it be your fault from the Info on the Black box"

now i know what a black box is, airplane records what the plane was doing etc etc..

Do our mustangs have black boxes?

Most newer cars (actual year depends on the particualr model) have crash data recorders as part of the ECM, PCM, BCM or SRS control module. It will record several values at the exact time of a crash/point of impact(air bag deployment) like, speed, rpm, % of braking, etc.

FYI, any car with On-Star, for you GM guys, that crash information is immediately available to the On-Star people.

That would be a smart idea so it could be told if you were speeding before an accident.

but what if the throttle hung open like they do on these cars sometimes? It would be your word vs Ford's...or some detail place shoves your floor mat up and your pedal catches on the lip...

+1

I used this data recorder to fight a speeding ticket! An officer said he "paced" me going 110mph and weaving in and out of lanes on a major interstate for 15 miles. My questions were:

1) Why did you wait 15 miles and until I was way off the exit to pull me over?
2) I would NEVER go that fast and drive like that in the RAIN which it was doing that evening.
3) So if you paced me, you were going 110mph as well? For that long?

Anyways, I immediately went to Ford and pulled the data. Since my car was new and I never reached that speedlimit to that date (presently i've hit 145+), it stated twothings...

1) Max Speed = 90mph (even though that is high, they couldn't use it against me)
2) The cop was a lieing pig.

Ultimately, it's used for crash data... but I turned it around and made the cop look like an @$$ in front of the court!
