Motorcraft Oil Question ?
yet another oil question... I've been looking for Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 PREMIUM Synthetic Blend oil, but have only been able to find 5W-20 Synthetic Blend Oil. So my question: are there two different 5W-20 Motorcraft oils? (1= PREMIUM Synthetic Blend; 2= Synthetic Blend) Or is Motorcraft now marketing their 5W-20 Synthetic Blend as "PREMIUM". Thx.
go w/ castrol syntec or w/ mobil 1. all other oils are inferior. dont believe me? takea frying pan, turn the stove way the hell up, put 1/4 inch high of oil in each pan and see how long it takes each oil to come to a boil. mobile 1 and castrol syntect take the longes, if ever.
This is my 2nd oil change (1st change done @ dealer @ 5K) and I've been on the fence about going to full synthetic. But I've seen a few threads stating full synthetics can be detrimental to VVT motors. Can anyone confirm/ deny ? I never thought selecting a brand/type of oil would have been so difficult... seems like the more you research... the more questions are raised.

ChiT-can the blend. Full synthetic is the way to go, not only for superior protection but for extended oil change frequencies (the later of which I won't get into since so many people have differing opinions and I don't want to open THAT can of worms). I'm using Amsoil in the Stang and Mobil 1 in my SUV. Mobil 1 is cheaper than the Amsoil and pretty darn close in properties.

No highjacking, but gotta clear this up. Just FYI, Castrol is NOT a synthetic. There are 6 classes of oil. Class 1-3 is regular oil. Class 4-6 is synthetic. Castrol Syntec is a Class 3. Virtually all oils you buy at retail outlets (parts stores) are not going to be Class 4's. Castrol, Valvoline, Qwacker State, Pennzoil, etc. are all Class 3's. The biggest syn oil companies are Amsoil, Redline, Mobil 1, and Royal Purple. Others are out there, but are lesser known or harder to find.
Blends are only 10-20% synthetic. Is it worth the money to you?
A judge allowed Castrol (and others followed) to use the term synthetic on their advertising. This lawsuit was settled back in October of '99 when Mobil sued Castrol over their use of the word "synthetic" and other claims used in advertising. If in doubt, just research, and it can be confirmed by anyone with a little time. You can search (Google) for the term "hydrocracking" and follow info from there.

Also, right now I'm planning on sticking with the Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend.Fordrecommends that oil in their manual. I'll be changing the oil filter every 3k miles (or every 6 months if our Mustang hasn't been driven 3k)anyway, so I might as well be changing the oil then too. I haven't been convinced yet that I need to switch to using fully synthetic oil. Maintaining the engines in my cars by changing the oil and oil filters every 3k miles has always worked well for me. I've never used synthetic oil or additives. But I'll keep an open mind. Thanks everyone for your opinions.
