EXTRA INSURANCE????
Now that I have over $20k in mods,I am wondering about ins.
Most of the mods are racing related-S/C, Roll cage, etc etc etc. Anyway, Do I let my ins company know, or should I look into a specialty ins co. And can I get a special coverage plan for only driving 3k a year?
What are you guys doing with high end mods?

What i did with my insurance company is make a list of all mods and the pricing it would required to replace these items. I then submitted it to the insurance company and they increase my rate a bit to cover it. I did this for my F-150 but have not done it yet with the Mustang.

I have Geico insurance in Dallas County (TX) and just updated my policy to include $10k worth of mods. I needed to renew my policy anyway, but it went from $508 (for 6 months) to $688. That comes out to be an increase of $30 per month. I am 29, white male, clean record (no accidents or tickets), and not married.
I have a $500 deductible for comprehensive and collision (I haven't paid off my car yet, so bank still owns it). I also have $20k/$40k liability and uninsured motorist, plus $15k property damage. These are the lowest (costing) coverages you can get in Texas I believe.
I have spent more than $10k in mods, but figure it would help if my car was totalled for some reason (knock on wood
). I have only driven the car about 5,000 miles in the last year, but it is my daily driver. Geico did not have a "low-mileage" or "barely-driven" discount available when I asked.
Hope this helps.

Just go to your insurance company and say
"Lets say I have these parts installed" and then hand them a list with prices and everything "and I want to have them covered under the policy, how much would that run me?"
That way they can give you a price without your rates going up because they don't know that you already have those things on your car.

The insurance company I write for doesn't charge for extensive modifications. Our members are expected to keep extensive records of the modifications and present them in the event of a loss. The only problem is, if somebody wrecks you their insurance company will do everything in their power to jerk you and only pay the book value of the car. We do expect to be told of the modifications but do not charge extra. Actually any company that charges extra for mods really shouldn't. The percentage of those with mods is so low that it's an acceptable risk compared to all the other people the company insures. The company I work for only insures military and their families so we tend to let things like that slide.
my agent said I'd need to take out a "rider" for an expensive mod, like a supercharger. But it would only cover the cost of the part, not the installation charges. Best to have complete documentation and receipts in case you're ever hit.
Has anyone heard of insurance companies offering discounts for low annual mileage? I've been bugging them about that for years.
