05 6cyl. w/manual transmission
Hi, I have a question regarding a noise that my car makes. With the clutch in and the shifter in any gear, everything is good. With the clutch out and in neutral, the transmission makes a kind of clacky-grindy (sorry) sound, like the sound of a bad bearing or something like that. Then while driving, when accelerating up to around 2K rpm in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, it makes a similar clacky hammering sound which subsides as I pass 2K or level off acceleration. It does not always do this. If I push the car hard (which I don't mind doing just for fun), I don't notice it as much. If I lay back and drive like I should when my kids are in the car, it makes this noise almost always. But sometimes it does not do it at all. It seems to make no difference if the car is cold or is up to running temp whether I get the noise or not.
To try to isolatewhere the noise is coming from so I can tell my dealer about it, I've accelerated the engine only as if I were driving to the samerpms, held it there, etc., with no noise other than the engine. I'm pretty convinced that it is coming from the tranny. It is driving me crazy. The dealer basically just shrugs and says they don't know. What do I do? Or a much better question, what would you all do?
Has anybody else had this problem or heard of it? Thanks everybody. I look forward to checking in here, looking at people's cars, reading about them and participating in the future - Craig

First off - find another dealer. No problem should ever be shrugged off.
The sound you are describing sounds like throwout bearing noise.
The noise changes when you push the clutch in with car idleing in nuetral - right?
