From my short time at a car plant, the sequence numbers are contiguous for the models, even if the line itself makes different vehicles. it's actually a very important part of the process, to keep these things straight.

I know I have read that for 60's and 70's Fords .... The VIN sequence number represented only the order it rolled down the assembly line for plants that built multiple models. So Car 123456 would have been car # 23456 (1 is a check digit)... not necessarly number 23456 of a specific model. Perhaps things have changed.

2 - Restraint Type Code= 4 digit
3 - Vehicle Line, Series, and Body Type =5th 6th 7th digits
4 - Engine Code = 8th digit
