Default dumb question about pinging..

I fill my car up with 87 and it pings like crazy at WOT. I use 89 and it goes away.

my 2001 GT did the same thing..

- is it doing it because the gas sucks? (which I wouldn't doubt down here)
- is there a way to fix it other than just using a higher octane? (a tune or something?)

yes you can get a tune for the higher gas level for better performance....the manual also states you might have pinging with the lower oct and need to use higher oct.

You might want to try running a can of Seafoam thru it. Carbon buildup can cause this.

You might just be shifting too early and getting on it.
If it pings - downshift.

Run the 89 octane and don't worry about it.

i'm not shifting early, but it doesn't seem like it should do it ever.

EVER? Like if you shift into 5th at 20 mph and hammer onit, you think it shouldn't ping?

But, the car is designed to run on regular, if it pings during normal driving with regular gas, you either have some bad gas (that crap in the midwest with the corn alcohol in it will make it ping like crazy) or it's time for a tuneup, or there's something wrong with the timing.

yeah i can understand it bogging down and sounding 'rough', but not pinging.

anyway, mine does it at WOT regardless of gear/speed.

i'll just keep using 89. must be nasty gas down here [:'(]
