Default Quick question about Xcalibrator

Seems like I read somewhere ( and cannot find it now for reference ) that unless you have a dealer license, your Xcalibrator is somehow married to your car via ID code in your computer, or your VIN or something like that...
Is this the case? If so, is the unit itself matched to your vehicle, or the tune you get, or both?
I know that SCT probably has some way to keep one person from buying one and tuning 20 other peoples cars without them getting money for it. Just don't know how they do it.

Also, isn't there some place on line that you can download standardized tunes, i.e. CAI w/91 octaine standard tune for XCalibrators? I know you have to have the special cable to get it from your PC to the tuner, just another one of those things I thought I read somewhere and now can't locate for reference.

Anyone know?

the x-box is vin locked after you reflash the first time..when you order it you have to give SCT your computer code.....you can unlock it by reflashing back to factory settings but it still has your 4 digit computer code in it I guess the computer code is the way they keep people from reflashing other vehicles

i'm not sure if there is a site where you can download standard tunes...I get all of mine emailed to me by SCT

So in other words, they basically have killed the used XCal market. Buy it, and it's yours for life? Sell the car and you might as well throw the tuner in the trunk along with anything else the person gets for free ?

thats what it sounds like...i'm sure SCT is able to reprogram a different computer code in a used one but the first owner of the box MUST reflash back to factory settings before the vin lock can be reset ...i think is a bunch of BS and should have went with the predator....which i still may do someday in the near future

I have to do that when my car comes out of the shop. They are putting a new computer in and I will have to go back to my dealer to get mine unlocked. The computer code everyone is talking about is not what serializes the box to your car. The code is only to differenciate between an Auto and a Stick. Mine is BTK2 and I bet every Auto is BTK2 unless the factory changes it and then SCT siad it would be like BTK3. The locking is done by the factory computer inside the transfer of files to the X box. Your cars computer has a one of a kind serial built in and SCT uses it to lock the box to your car. My bad I got the T and K backwards. The file is right on my desktop and I forgot to look at it. It is BKT2 not BTK2

Interesting info. Thanks for the replies.
Reason for asking is I found someone that has already sold their GT. They own a X-Cal. He was wanting to sell it for $200. Not a bad deal at all if it is usable. But if it is not usable.......

If you need a regular fuel file for the Steeda CAI I can email you one. I got it from Dave at SCT. With fuel prices as high as they are I think i'm going to use the regular fuel file for awhile.

yeah I already switched to my 87 octane program...I had it custom tuned with the 93 and 87 just cause I knew the summer was gonna get crazy with the gas prices...I dunno about anywhere else but premium in northwest florida is running about 2.40-2.50 a gallon and gonna get worse come summer...hey but thanks anyway
