Default Electrical Burning Smell

Hey guys,

I have a really weird issue that I can't figure out and I wondered if ya'll could help. Here is the deal:

The other day my car had this bad burning smell coming from the engine compartment on the driver's side. I had no clue what it was so I took it in to the dealership. They told me that my car was in perfect condition and that the smell was coming from the insulation.

I have a hard time believing that getting my engine up around 3,000-4,000 RPM's makes the insulation under the hood smell like an electrical fire.

Any ideas on what might be wrong?

What really bothers me is that when I do hit these RPM's the smell comes in through the air vents and the window's if they are down so it makes the entire car smell like its on fire. Not to mention when I get out it smells terrible.

The dealership said all they could do was replace the insulation but I still can't believe that that is at all the problem.

Any comments/suggestions appreciated.

at first i though it was a plastic
bag, but you say the dealer took
a look at it....

the exhaust heat shielding shouldn't
smell like it is on fire

I noticed the new Bullitt had a small to it.
They said it was the new, different brake pads.

Does it smell like that? How old is your Mustang?

It's an 05 Manual. They said it was the insulation in the engine compartment... which sounds a little odd to me considering it it smells eletrical and only happens when the car gets up to around 3000-4000 RPM's. Its really anoying because it makes the whole car smell like a fire because it comes throught the air vents and the dealership said they couldn't do anything about it because the car was fine unless they replaced the insulation under the hood (which I don't want to spend money on if it's not even the problem...) More suggestions would be appreciated.

I have an 06 V6 and I have been getting a similar smell. I put on a new set of dual exhausts the other day and I have been thinkingthat it is just the new exhausts burning in. Has anyone ever heard of this before?
