Might be a dumb question..
What do you mean by rear louvres? Window Louvres for the 1/4 windows? or Side Louvres or Side Scoops along the door seam and up over the wheel well?
Either way both are cosmetic... usually. Both can be turned into functional air ducts for rear brake cooling systems.

The rear window louversprobably help to keep the greenhouse effect to a minimum keeping the interior cooler in the summer andalso help to keep the glare off the glass... and it looks cool too, I like it.

Edit: It's a Googled pic, not my car.

I don't think it hurts performance in any way. But like already said, it keeps the interior cooler, and it protects the fake leather on top of the back seats from the harmful effects of the Sun.
they originally started putting louvers on the rear window to try to keep the cars a little cooler. The fastback especially got pretty hot with that big rear window.
As far as 1/4 window louvers... maybe it was the same logic? Or to get a little privacy in the back seat?

I heard today while watching a rerun of the Jan. Barrett-Jackson that the Lamborghini Miura was one of the first cars that helped start the look of the rear louvers.

1966! Can you believe that? And still sexy as hell! This is the updated late model concept.
