nittos
just looking for a daily driver street tire that will grip the road and the track, will the nitto 555r work and how wide of a tire can i put on the stock 17in rims i think i have the 235/55.
He's asking about the 555r's, which is the drag radial version of the 555.
OP - As for what the max size is, I have no idea, but if you're really concerned about grip/performance, you should get a different set of wheels.

yeah thats what i plan on doing is getting wider rims but one can hope too not spend more then you have to, all i careabout is performance and not so much looks, but hey if i have to get a set of rims to put wider tires guess you have to pay to play. What would be a good width to get with out having to moddify anything. Would 315 be the widest?
As for putting tires on the stock rims I have been told thata 255 is the widest a person should go but I have also heard people putting on 275's so I'm not sure. I would like to know the same thing because I am running stock rims, 8" wide, and want a wider tire than stock.
"Daily driver street tire" and "...good grip on the road and track" are almost mutually exlusive.
A good gripping tire will have minimal tread, and a fairly soft rubber compund. A good street tire will have just the opposite. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
The 555r is - by all accounts - is an excellent DoTrace tire. It handles well on the street, and can manage a little bit of moisture, but not much. But it won't last long. You'll be really lucky to 20K miles out of them. 10-12K is more likely. It has a soft sidewall, so cornering ability will suffer. But you'll get a cushy ride.
A good street tire will have a good tread patter to handle all kinds of weather, a somewhat stiff sidewall to handle potholes and such. And will have a thick relativly hard tread to handle the weight, miles, and heat.
Life's full of trade offs, you just have to pick the one's you're willing to live with.

I just bought the american muscle 17x9" rim which is similar to stock and put the 275/40/17 drag radial on there and put 245/45/17 on the front stock 17x8" bullit wheels...that has worked great for me...
