Hood struts

Ok, who's using which hood strut kit? Looking to get one that doesn't require drilling. I see that Steeda, MRT and CDC all offer them. Any pros/cons to each one?

You guys, just sit tight. One of my buddies will be introducing a set real soon that he came up with that is not only very functional but looks like it came with the car or at least it should, especially when it is color coded to the car. Ill put up the info soon.

I have the MRT's and love them.
They are the same design as the CDC's, so you really can't go wrong with either.
The MRT's offer the powder coating, but you could have either painted to match your car at any paint shop.
Also, they recommend 2 people install, but I did it myself.
Too easy.

have steedas on mine for almost a year. work great

157dB 05-01-2008 03:10 PM

RE: Hood struts

The only thing I know about them is when
you put the struts on incorrectly upside down
and close the hood, it buckles the hood by the
hinges and its never the same again.
Read the instructions fully before undertaking the job. ;)

MRTs here. They have been working very well.

Ragnar 05-01-2008 03:28 PM

RE: Hood struts

I have the ones from Steeda, my friend Stoenr has the ones from MRT. We are satisfied with both. Neither required drilling. However, now that we switched to fiberglass hoods we notice they bow the hood. I have removed mine and gone back to the prop rod until something better comes along. I think Stoenr disconnects one end of the strut before closing his.

Bottom line. They're fine for the stock hoods. Not good for fiberglass goods.

I have MRT. I lovethem, I had an issue with the passenger side mount to the body moving when I shut the hood. I called MRT, they recommended some double sided foam tape and now, no problems. They look great IMO.

There's a pic of the stillen one on the bottom of the webpage, there's a little photo icon in the ordering section.

I wonder if there is an advantage or disadvantage, mechanically speaking, to either design?

RE: Hood struts

Here are thehood strutsthat Joe is referring to...they will be powdercoated to match your Stang for that factory look. I am awaiting information from the molding company for a estimated delivery date, as of an hour ago it looks like 2 weeks. There are possibly a few painted proto types available sooner, but most likely bebest to wait for the powdercoating company to finish with the order. There will be natural aluminum sets available first of next week. At that time I will be able to give out pricing, they will be very competitive and you will definitely like the fit and finished product once installed. Uses existing hood bolts and one fender bolt, NO drilling required.

RE: Hood struts

Grabber, a few questions if you don't mind

1.) price?

2.) what is the psi in the pistons?

3.) do these struts lift up the hood gently, or do they throw the hood up so that i have to fight it, or do i have to lift up the hood to where i want it and the struts just hod them there?

Price will be under $125, waiting on final pricing after coating, will check on the psi but I can tell you that it doesn't throw the hood up and it pulls down very easy...Mellowyellow(Joe) helped me install mine last Sunday, simple 10 minute install and they work fantastic.

I forgot to list the colors at the powdercoater that will be available. Additional colors may be available after the first production run. If your color is not listed, you could buy the Natural aluminum and paint them yourself. My set which is a color prototype is painted, and they look great. The Natural aluminum will becheaper than the powdercoated sets:

Natural aluminum finish (either unfinished or powdercoated clear)
Performance White
Vista Blue
Windveil Blue
Grabber Orange
Torch Red
Screaming Yellow
Legend Lime
Black

ok, 2 more questions (sorry, but any time i initially like a product i have to scrutinize very carefully)

4.) is the hood easy to close after intallation?

5.) do you have / could you post video of the struts in action? (this is one thing i never see when people are selling hood struts)

grabberorange1 05-01-2008 11:20 PM

RE: Hood struts

Yes it closes easily, even tho I do slam mine down after it popped open on me at 105mph...

Yeh I guess you're gonna force me to learn that video function on my camera....been wanting to do it just been lazy. Will work on that tomorrow.

these hood struts caused your hood to pop open at 105? or was that prior to installing these beautiful struts

no, that was a lesson I learned when it was brand new...make sure you get the hood closed good or it will pop open at high speed.

plutnicki 05-02-2008 06:16 AM

RE: Hood struts

Looks like you aren't doing my color... I'd go for a natural aluminum set, especially if I could get
them before next weekend (since I'm doing underhood work next weekend anyway...).

I'll PM you.

Ill be installing my set on Saturday so we can show you on a different color and how they will function on an aftermarket hood. What I love about these is that they will look like they are part of your car and not some robocop bracket the attracts the eye when your hood is open.
