Default CAI Question

Can somebody explain how this works? I have been told that it is only increasing air flow, not cooling the air. The reason I ask is, in the morning it really snaps when I rev it, after about 10 minutes it gets squishy.
Will I have to flash the computer after installing? Something about disconnecting a board to do the install and having to flash the computer again.
Any opinoins on the different manufacturers quality?

Thanks

It is more of a mass air intake than a cold air intake, the air is never actually cooled down. It just increases air flow. Any CAI that doesn't require a tune isn't worth buying.

You install the CAI, reflash the computer, and you're good to go.

Most CAIs will increase the air volume. This is what causes the need to reflash the computer. The algorythm in the OAK computer that calculates the air/fuel ratio needs to compensate for the added air flow. There has been a lot of deliberation over the years whether the material the CAI is made of will affect the air temperature. Te truth of the matter is that the air is flowing through the CAI at a rate of speed that does not allow any significant heat transfer from the CAI walls to the air it self. I have the Aluminum C&L and I love it. I bought mine back in early '05 when the C&L was the only game in town. Now there are many other manufacturers offering a wide choice in materials and looks. I personally like the Granatelly because of the polished aluminum look.

Our engines heat-soakquickly and that'll really sap your power. If yours is heat soaked after 10 minutes, I'm hoping it's because you're in the deep south and it's hot as heck in the morning.

Regardless, a CAI & tune combo will certainly wake up the ponies. The tune adds the real kick but the 2 (CAI & tune) were made for each other.

Yeah, deep south says it all. 104 degrees last night when I headed home. Gotta love Texas. Any suggestions on a good tuner? I have heard stories about several, some good & some not so.

If you are looking to buy a CAI tuner combination, you should check out Brenspeed or BamaCips. They are both excellent. I went wit Doug because he has more options for tuners. I have a predator and fortunately Doug offers his tunes on the Diablo.

If you buy a tune and programmer from Doug, he typically throws in3 tunes. (87,91 and 93 perfromance tunes). I bought the 93 race tune and it is a beast.

I also love the look of that set up, but it appears not to need a flash how do they get around that?

They sell it with a new MAF sensor that is calibrated for the increased MAF housing size.

That is an untrue and uneducatedstatement. Most CAI's that dont require that you tune for them have removable restrictorsIC&L street and airaid are 2 prime exaples). They allow for tuning with or w/o this restrictor. Most of the gain from a tune/cai combo will be from the tune you'll gain more from tuning the car than just putting on a cai of course, however for the most part it doesnt really even matter what cai you use as long as you like it.

My CAI delivers inlet air temps of 5-10 degrees over ambient
air tempsat cruising speeds. I dont know what the stock airbox
delivers temperature wise as I didnt have my DashHawk
when the stocker was on there. They do sound mean at WOT.
BBBBBRRRRRRMMMMMM BBBBBBRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMMMMM.
Is the snappy throttle occuring during open loop mode and
disappears when the PCM goes into closed loop mode once
the cats warm up and start sending valid O2 readings?
