Sorry for the stupid questions, but the search function is broken!

I've been looking at ways to add a little extra horsepower to the Mustang. Supercharging and turbocharging look great, but the install looks pretty complex and that $4k or $5k sticker price is pretty expensive.

I only plan on using the system when I'm in the mood. That really makes nitrous attractive. "On" when I want it, "off" when I'm don't feel like using it. I also want to go easy on engine. Specifically, I'm looking at a 50 hp kit.

The NOS kit is inexpensive and looks to be relatively easy to install. There must be a catch. I have a few questions:

1) How many 50 hp "shots" can I get out of a 10 lbs bottle?

2) How expensive is it to fill a 10 lbs bottle?

3) How safe is it to have in the car? If I get in accident, do I risk death or injury if the bottle ruptures? Is there such a thing as a NHTSA approved system?

4) Will I still pass Virginia state inspection if I remove the bottle prior to inspection time? What's the ticket for getting caught with one on the street?

5) I have an SCT 93 octane tune and Steeda intake. Do I need a new tune with an NOS system?

6) 50 hp sounds pretty safe to me. I'm not risking engine damage, am I?

Any help would be greatly appreciate. Please, let's not turn this thread into a forced induction vs. nitrous debate. I'm well aware of the overall pros and cons.

1) 6-7 with a bottle warmer maybe more
2) Avg. about $4 a pound. More at the track, find someone local. You will get a better fill if you put the bottle in the freezer first.
3) Its safe. Check out NHRA and your local track rules for mounting and if blow down tube is required.
4) Don't know, I live in Michigan. A cop once looked in my trunk and said "cool".
5) Most say you will need a tune only if you spray more than a 50 shot.....and you will spray more eventually...trust me.
6) No system is "completely" safe. You may want to consider one range colder on your plugs more with a bigger spray.

7) Racing is for the track, nitrous is for the track.

Have fun, be safe.

4. A remote bottle opener would be a great add on for any street encounters. It's not illegal to have a closed nitrous bottle in the trunk with a remote opener on. How would he have probable cause to look in your trunk anyway for a basic traffic stop?
6. Everybodies cars aredifferent. I know thers a lot of zex kits running 75 shots on a stock or air intake tuned s197.

Great information!

Virginia has some arcane auto laws. For example, I pay personal property tax on my vehicle each year, it costs me over $800 in tax each year to have the Mustang and the C5, radar detectors are illegal and a "working" nitrous system on a street car is also illegal.

They are hard on tint and lights mounted under a vehicle as well. VA is the last state where I'd cover my turn signals or something like that.

I love my state, but sometimes I think the guys in Richmond need to lighten up.

What do you think of the NOS kit? I guess I'm defaulting to NOS because I've heard of them before. Kind of like Autometer when I did my gauges.

I can get the Big Shot Ford EFI Nitrous Kit from Summitt for $655, that seems like a good price. It even includes a window switch.

It seems like the kits are a little incomplete for my taste. It looks like I'll need to buy at least a:

- Pressure Gauge
- Remote Bottle Opener

I'm on a budget, so a heater will probably have to be installed later. I guess I can make due with a bottle blanket for now.

I've been searching for a NOS pressure relief valve. They don't seem to make one. The instructions for the kit, however, say:

"Never change pressure settings of safety relief valve on the nitrous bottle valve. Increasing the safety relief valve pressure settings may create an explosive bottle hazard."

That seems to suggest that some sort of safety valve is inherent in the NOS kit. I'm not exactly sure.

One last question! What's the best way to mount the switches?

The kit comes with a mounting bracket that replace the buttons used to operate the computer display on my dash. Yeah, no thanks.

What are some alternative options?

The only one I can think of is a switch plate made by Speed of Sound, LLC.

I like the zex kit for an s197, nx kit looks good, but too much for my budget. Are you looking into the whole kit? Remote opener, bottle heater, window switch, purge, gauges? I like the sos switch panel, you can get them custom engraved, they look good to me. Half cupholder panel.

Agreed, the NX system seems to be the most expensive. Zex is cheaper, but it doesn't include the window switch. The NOS kit already contains the window switch.

I'm looking at installing a basic system. A bottle gauge seems pretty important and I would like to open the bottle while I'm in the car.

Here is another stupid question. Does the automatic bottle opener close the bottle, too? I assume it does.
