Default Car Jack

Hey guys,

I was looking a a car jack to lift my car so I can work underneath it. I plan on buying some lowering springs, and installing them myself, but I don't own a car jack or stands. How much should I pay for a descent setup, and what are the key areas that I should look into when purchasing a jack?

Thanks guys!

If you're going to lower you're car you should probably get a low rider jack for future use. I picked mine up for $220

220? way too much.A nice little craftsman jack does it for me. less then 50 with 2 jackstands. I'm lowered too.

If you plan on lowering your car you'll need a low profile jack. Otherwise you'll have to drive up on some 2x6s and then put the jack under there, which is a PITA.

I like aluminum jacks b/c of their weight advantage but most won't lift as much weight as steel.

Most reasonably priced aluminum jacks will have a 3,000 lb rating. You can find 4,000 lb rated aluminum jacks but they get to be quite pricey and become almost as heavy as steel.

I just purchased this jack from Northern Tool based on weight, price, and online user ratings. So far it's been excellent. I think, for the price it's hard to beat.

I bought a 3.5 ton low profile jack at Costco it cost me $79.99 I can lift my full size SUV and the Mustang $220 way to much. Its been a while so they cost a little more you can buy at the store or on line http://www.costco.com/Common/Category.aspx?ec=BC-EC22577-Cat21277&pos=4&whse=BC&topnav=&cat =61837&eCat=BC|3960|21277|61837&lang=en-US

Get a standard floor jack. They're inexpensive and last forever. Get a piece of 2x12 lumber, and maksome small ramps to drive up on. Then you can get a jack under there without hurting anything.

I'm lowered, and I drive up on a couple of 2X6's and then use a standard shop jack like suggested earlier. Not exactly the way I would want to do it...but until I fork over the dough to get the low profile jack it works for me!

You guys are right....$220 is way too much. I actually paid $170 (dunno why I had $220 in my brain lol). It's a 2-ton low rise which is why is costs more.

The Costco near me only had the Arcan alj3t, $160.00, Lift range 3.77" - 19.3", weight 58 lb
I went to all local stores and it was best bang for buck I could find.
Yes I don't need a 3ton, but I do like the extra lift height, and it fits under my car with stock gt bumber.

And the fact that it's blue was just an extra for me.
