Hello & A Question
For the first time in my life I am very seriously considering a Mustang. I'm a former Turbo Buick guy and enjoyed laying the smack down on backwards hat wearing 20 year olds in Fox body 'Stangs. However, the '05 is an absolute thing of beauty and I've fallen hook, line and sinker. I plan on waiting until I can work off of MSRP and then pounce. Hopefully end of '05.
My question is how has the 3 valve motor stood up to boost? Has anyone "door stopped" one yet? If so, was it simply due to detonation or are there some weaknesses (rods, crank)? I know Ford hooked the 03/04 Cobra up with a solid foundation for the roots blower and wonder how the new motor has handled the added stress. I would like to add a roots type blower to an otherwise stock drivetrain and drive it daily, the car would see very limited track time.
Regards,
John

Thank you for the reply. The Procharger setup looks really sweet. I ask the question because I've heard scuttlebutt that a few motors have let go under boost. If some kid and his buddies had done the install under a tree and then went WOT with out a tune then that could be understandable. However, if it happened to a "guru" then there maybe a few things to work through before enjoying the boost.

The new 3 valve motor is extremely efficient, and accepts boost very well. The motor is probably good for 450-500 rwhp in it's stock form, tuned correctly. After that, you are jeopardizing the motor's connecting rods, which is the weakest link in the 3v motor. You could throw a twin screw blower on an 05 and make 450 rwhp safely, as long as the tune is good. I haven't heard of anybody who has blown up an 05 motor yet.

I appreciate all the responses so far. I am leaning heavily towards the Saleen setup as it's just the slickest forced induction deal I've seen. Also, if their HP figures are accurate then that will be enough for me on a daily driver. By the time I buy mine everyone should have their products on the market. I'm also looking forward to seeing what Whipple brings to the table.
I've heard of an issue with the rods, not the block or crank. The A/F was inline and the car wasn't anywhere near "kill". No detonation so that would mean the rods are definitely the weak link. Best of luck to everyone putting boost to their cars and please pass along any success/failure stories.
