Default Octane Question

This may sound like a stupid question, but the new mustangs and all for that matter are designed to run on the low octane fuel. What are the advantages of running a higher octane, besides cleaner on the engine? Also what does reflashing the computer, and telling it your running a higher octane do? Can't you just fill up with the higher octane?

Default RE: Octane Question

I used to think Premium was more "powerful" for the engine. Not. I used to think Premium was better for additives and engine cleaning. Not.

Bottom line, Premium designed to resist preignition in higher compression engines. Ford designed our engine to run on Regular. I did read that one "tuner" did recalibrate the engine to run with different settings, Premium became needed, power was up.

I ran Premium for many years in cars that only needed Regular. Read much. Finally became convinced I had been throwing my money away for years. Save yours.

I ride a 1300cc high performace motorcycle. Runs on Regular by design. I have an old BMW, much modified, designed to run on Regular, I run "Plus" in it, doesn't ping that way. I don't think you'll find any gain running Premium.

I did run across run article, fellow running Premium in his cycle. Running was getting bad, pipes showing blacking. Switched to Regular as per the manual. Scoot started running better, pipes cleaned up.

Default RE: Octane Question

I agree...no need to run anything more than 87 on a stock stang...save your money for when those mods call for higher octane...
