idle time
There have been several times when I have posted that my drive to work in only 1.5 miles. I cant walk to work (attire, briefcase, etc.) but I also understand this is not good for the engine.
My question is this, if I let my pony idle for 5 or 10 minutes prior to driving, would that remedy the situation? or would the idle do more harm than good? How long in winter??
and yes I do mean with the garage door partially open !!!!

In pxdig's situation, it's not just frequent short, 1.5 mile trips. It's twice daily every day. By not allowing the engine to attain operating temperature, you allow numerous undesireable things to occur such as accumulation of moisture which leads to a build-up of acids (Rolaids?) in the crankcase. I'm no expert but I believe you also allow carbon build-up. There probably are others.
I don't think allowing the engine to idle is the answer. How about the long way to work (like maybe 5 miles or more)?

how would you get moisture in your crankcase? Acids?
Thinking a bit too much into this. Drive your car, it doesn't have to warm up unless you are racing it or maxing your rev limiter to and from work, but then again that probably wouldn't do harm either.
Enjoy your car and don't be so technical.

I suggest to find a longer route home. It is a Mustang, have fun.....
Condensation will cause the moisture. Not getting the engine up to operating temps for a long enough time will cause a build up.

Cause what to build up??
You are all looking too much into this honestly.
But what would I know........it's not like my hubby and I aren't mechanics and he doesn't work for ford......
This is the smartest response:
