mgw shifter

I am looking at ordering one within the next week and I was just checking out their website, and I noticed at the bottom of the page where you purchase the set up you can buy the shifter, adjustable stop kit for the shifter, and the extra handle. I was wondering what all is necessary for the short-throw install in my gt.

mortman 10-13-2008 08:36 AM

It a simple swap, there instructions are super easy. Best money i spent on the stang yet. While your under thee change the trans fluid with RP you will be pleasantly surprised

americaniron 10-13-2008 08:56 AM

You don't need the adjustable stop kit for it, and you need to order it with the correct thread pattern for whatever kind of shift knob you wish to use.

5SPD07GT 10-13-2008 09:10 AM

i've been wanting to change my tranny fluid to RP but not sure how and dont wanna F it up. The MGW is real easy to install, just give George a call and he'll set you up with what you need.

deekum1627 10-13-2008 09:36 AM

how did changeing the fluid make a diff i wanna do mine soon i got 4,000 on my car,

deekum1627 10-13-2008 09:54 AM

guys teach us why mgw is the best what bushings do they use and any other info would be great

alloutt 10-13-2008 12:01 PM

how do you change the trans fluid?

red07Pony 10-13-2008 12:21 PM

Calling Taco Bill.........need a sticky thread on how to change our manual tranny fluid.

Any Taco Bill imitator is welcome as long as they live up to his standards....LOL

I've been wondering how to change it as well but I've got a V6 so I wonder how different it is than the GT.

A new shifter and maybe RP fluid change is next on my want list as I'm growing more frustrated with the stock shifter.

deekum1627 10-13-2008 12:27 PM

Comparison between the two coming soon??

deekum1627 10-13-2008 12:48 PM

yea ill make a post and compare the two for everyone lol

Rubrignitz 10-13-2008 12:59 PM

There used to be a sticky created by "moosestang" that detailed how to refill the fluid through the transom (shifter) hole. Worked great for me when I changed my fluid.

It's as easy (even easier due to no filter replacement) than changing your oil. One refill hole at the top of tranny and a drain hole at the bottom. It can get really messy though...

Make sure to have the reservoir REALLY close to the drain hole or it will go EVERYWHERE. It's much thinner than motor oil and will splash all over if you're not careful. I'll try to locate that sticky for you guys.

deekum1627 10-13-2008 01:09 PM

which fluid did you guys use and whats the diff does it make the tranny quiter

deekum1627 10-13-2008 02:07 PM

degeze 10-13-2008 02:30 PM

I used RP synchromax, smooth as butter now. And after fighting with shift knobs for awhile decided to go back to a universal favorite, the pistol grip. best shifter grip I've ever used! woudn't trade it for the world. works with the MGW standard thread post.

deekum1627 10-13-2008 03:04 PM

i got the black mgw ball with the satin finish handle below the ball

Rubrignitz 10-13-2008 03:14 PM

I got the black w/ polished when ordering the shifter. That black ball looks good but is slicker than whale ****. :D

deekum1627 10-13-2008 03:31 PM

haha i got ruff hands that should help lol

Rubrignitz 10-13-2008 03:44 PM

Hope they're like sandpaper. I'm holding that thing in my hand (was going to snap a pic but my little Kodak work camera burns thru batteries like sagebrush).

I can hold that thing in my right hand and rotate it in my left and there is NO WAY I can hold onto the shift knob. Same crap that happened to me during street races, missed shifts from hell.

You can yank the crap out of that pistol grip and something will break in the trans/driveline before your grip will.:D

deekum1627 10-13-2008 04:48 PM

ill see hwo it is lol if i have to ill oder the one that looks ruff

I've had my MGW installed for 2 weeks now.
Prior I had the stock shifter with Steeda poly bushings.
When I first got this car, missing 3rd was an issue, shifter wasn't too bad, just kept missing 3rd on a hard pull.
After installing the poly bushings in the stock shifter, I didn't have a problem with 3rd anymore. They were only $14.00 when I got them 2 yrs ago.
The MGW is an impressive piece, makes the stock unit look like a toy.
The rear of the shifter assy hard bolts to the top of the trans tunnel & the fwd end hard bolts to the transmission. Brass or bronze bushing is used there. No rubber or poly bushings on either end. You can adjust the throw by dialing in or out the linkage rod end on the bottom of the shifter. I set mine @ 6 turns, midway.
Takes more effort to shift vs the stock unit & has a centering spring , where the stock shifter has no centering spring. Very precise clunk, clunk going through neutral & into the next gear. No question of a good engagement. Biggest change I had to adjust to was the extra effort shifting gears, no more being lazy shifting. Didn't have any binding or issues going into gear under a hard load.
The neutral position of the stick is further rearward than with the stock shifter.
Overall, I'm real pleased with the shifter & it will be a keeper for me.
I used the stock IUP knob on mine & have the rough finish MGW ball if anyone wants, I'll part with it cheaply.
Install was easy, about an hour total. Be glad to answer any specific questions if needed.

I have the gripper knob as well and it "grips" better than the "ball" but either are great and work well with the MGW. If you have the stock ball or the gripper knob from MGW ltd. then you have to order the threads for the stock shifter on checkout. If in question just call MGW.....great customer service and excellent products!:D
