Rear Independent Suspensions?

Rear Independent Suspensions?
This may sound farfetched but how hard do you think it would be to build or convert the s197 rear suspensions to Independent. I know of one that converted its rear suspension to GT40 Independents. Do you think mustang shops would do that kind of work given the money?

While I would love to be able to buy a bolt up or near bolt up IRS, I have to assume that it is not a very feasible task. If it were companies like Roush, Saleen, Steeda, etc. that produce there own Mustang versions would release an IRS car. Saleen's Parnelli Jones inparticular come to mind, but the fact is the best they could do was a Watt's Linkage.

As noted above, some of the past Cobras used an IRS. I have a friend who bought one of the Bondurant racing school Cobras when then sold all their cars. His came with a stick axle. The reason? Bondurant bought the Cobras with an IRS from the factory and then promptly replaced some of the them with stick axles because they are much lighter weight and simplier. The FR500s and I'm pretty sure its brethern (FR500C, etc) use stick axles. Almost every competitor in American Iron and AIX use stick axles. Some day Ford will probably build a stong lightweight IRS for the Mustang (even GM did in the new Camaro) but until then I suspect the cost to develop one (for a company like Roush or Saleen, etc) is to high.

A couple a weeks ago someone posted this question in the classics section. Someone over there posted a site that made an IRS for classics and our cars. I think it ran about $6000. You might search the classics for IRS to see if you can find the post.
