Exactly.

Get yourself a pocket planner, 1 month/2 pages, and keep it in the center console. Log you odometer reading and the # of gallons you pump at each fill-up. Then just calculate it at your convenience. I usually take mine in to work about once or twice/month and do it at lunch. I also average each month (yeah, I know, I'm ****... but that's what engineers do. Hell, I even used to graph the monthly average).

No one is more of an engineer than I am. I have always used MPG as a problem indicator. My current problems are the new 20's (heavy), carpooling (50-70% less highway), and inexpensive gas (running 93 tune, noticed its worse on gas last time I used it). I bet my MPG would go up a little if I went back to my 87 tune. I'm sure it would go up if I quit carpooling, but that would be stupid.

to the op. how far was your old commute? ive noticed that the computer is taking your avg mpg and giving you your miles per tank. i have only gotten one tank to read 330+ till empty. but it was because the last tank i had in it i got 20mpg average. and on the last fill up i was averaging 18.3 and i once i filled up the computer read 290 miles till empty. just something to think about. just the logic i have come up with on why i cant get 300 miles a tank but just that once. hope this helps a little bit.

My old commute was about 10 miles. City/highway. I used to average about 320 on the onboard computer... and whenever I did an estimate with the math it was reasonable accurate.

Now with that said, I barely drive at all. My commute is like 3 minutes away so you get there in a snap. Yet my gas mileage both on the onboard computer and my pocket... are suffering drastically. The fuel filter was changed like 3000 miles or so ago so I can't see that being at fault.

Like I said, I am going home for thanks giving and I should get there on one tank because I got here on one tank (360 miles, give or take) So we'll see how it does when the time comes.

I would not count on the computer being anywhere near that consistent. I've seen mine differ from the manually computed numbers anywhere from a couple percent to over 12%.

At 75 mph on a straight hwy here i was getting 22mpg with the onboard comp.
Now Canada uses the Imperial gallon "1 British Imperial gallon = 1.201 U.S. gallons "
i dont know if the car is using this err.."looks for Manual".

When I go on a longer trip, like to Vegas, I can get about 23 mpg with all highway driving. This means 70+, with a few stretches up to over 100 if the road is wide open.
But put me in bumper to bumper traffic on the Strip and I get 14 mpg.

BTW, if the speed limit was 30, with no stopping, you should be getting great mpg! You must have left out all the stops in the description.
