Default Question on Rims

Hey all,

I am changin the Rims on my 05 GT and wanted some advice....I am almost sure I will go for the ones don_w went for - the Bullitts...but I have some questions as I dont know much about wheels, etc!

Firstly - what is the offset - +45mm offset for instance is what don_w has?? I have also found some on eBay with 24 or 36 offset - what does this all mean and what is the best way to go???

Also - the Rims on eBay are 17X9 but some are 17X10 ( I am keeping my existing stock tires) - what does the 9 or 10 part mean and again whats the best way to go??

I'm sorry to ask questions some of you will think are f***ing stupid but as I said I dont have alot of experience changing wheels, etc.

Thanks in advance for advice!!!!!!!

+45mm is the same as stock, changing that will either tuck your wheel into the wheel well more or less... a +45mm is about even with the fenders.. as for 17x9 or 17x10 the 9 and 10 are how wide the wheel is.. if you go with the 10's in the rear you will need new tires.

The offset of a wheel is the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel to the true centerline of the rim. A positive offset means the mounting surface of the wheel is positioned inside of the true centerline of the rim / tire assembly. This in effect brings the tire in to the fender well more. Conversely, a negative offset means the mounting surface of the wheel is outside the true centerline of the rim / tire assembly. This will cause the tire to stick out away from the vehicle.

A +24 or + 36 mm offset rim will protrude from the fender well approx 3/8"or 3/4" (respectively) more than a +45mm offset wheel.

Also - the Rims on eBay are 17X9 but some are 17X10 ( I am keeping my existing stock tires) - what does the 9 or 10 part mean and again whats the best way to go??
17 is the tires inner diameter where it contacts the rim,
9, 10 is the width of the rim from lip to lip. Best to stay with the stock width unless you are going to use wider tires.
You could use a 25 mm wider tire with the 10" IF they have enough clearance.

OK guys - just called a company called Custom Wheels and they said the 17X9's might not fit the stock tires as the 'stock rims' are 8 inches wide and not 9.....?? Is this guy right or wrong? Very important as its costing me $380 to Fed Ex to ship the damn things so I must make sure I get the correct rims sent over!

Yes, stock rims are 8" wide. According to Pirelli's specs, the stock 235/55s will fit on a 7" - 8.5" wheel.

What size did you order, Nick?

$165 ea is a great price for chrome! When I looked at customwheelsmarket.com last month, they were higher priced for my wheels than MustangTuning.com was. So, of course, they drop the price after I get mine!! Those bastids... [:@]

Question for don_w -
On the chrome Bullit wheels you installed (whick look awesome), have you tried to see if Mustang center caps will fit? I've got a set of polished 17" GT wheels on back-order, and my dealer hasn't been able to give me an answer as to when they might become available again. I would consider going to your style chrome Bullit wheels, but I'd like to keep a Ford/Mustang center cap. Didn't know if you tried to retro-fit them or not.

Thanks!
