Default starter problems?

This morning it was really cold and I started and there was this weird thunk - thunk - thunk accompanied by the dash lights flashing. after about 4 thunks and being unable to start it i let go of the ignition position. then i after a few seconds i tried again and it started.

is this a battery problem or a starter problem? i havent experienced this before but since it happened with the cold weather (around 30 degrees), i figured it was weather related.

has anyone experienced this problem before?

sounds like a starter. The Bendix gear might have a chipped tooth.
