Default Goofy gauges.....

well its been an awesome 46k miles on the beast but finally got a malfunction....luckily its a relatively small one...too bad im 10k miles past my warranty coverage...

my oil gauge is being retarded...it started about 3 days ago....i got in the car and before cranking it up, my oil gauge read as so:

then after cranking it up, it read as so:

its like its jammed up or something....like the wire going into the back on the gauge needle has rotated a bit and now the gauge is off.....

i also checked the oil dipstick to make sure it was a malfunction, the oil level was within normal limits....

any of you gurus have a solution for this?

only thing I could think of would try and take the dash apart and try and diagnose it from there, maybe disconnect the wire going to it and see if it resets. I know it would be a pain in the A$$ but sometimes you gotta tinker with stuff...

Would disconnecting the battery reset it? Would that be the same thing as disconnecting a wire? Might be worth a try before taking the dash apart... I know doing that reset my engine light on my Escort - (which of course is not an analog gauge).

My money is on a sending unit. If you wanna take it out you can check it to see.

try disconnecting the battyer first

check the wires where the sending unit is next to the oil filter

then see if you could borrow another cluster, from someone

then buy a new sending unit, should be cheap

if none of the above works....trade it in for a gt500KR

if all else fails you might wanna pull off the needle and reset it in the proper spot??
and buy an aftermarket guage to keep an eye on it for real. It seems to look like the needle is just to far off... kinda like it got jammed over. Just an idea. I would do the above first and then use that as a last resort

hmmm....ill try the battery trick but im not sure it will work....if that doesnt do the trick, ill sit on it for a bit since it not THAT important right now as long as i keep an eye on the dipstick....they dont really check your guages in shows so i guess it wont hurt me too bad.....
