Default Help! Persistent Shifter Rattle Issue

Hi guys & gals!

Allow me to explain an issue that I've had with my Pro 5.0 shifter since it's installation; I'm hoping I can get some advice about how to fix it:

Quite some time ago I had the 5.0 installed by a knowledgeable friend. I never had any real problems with the gearbox, aside from a rattle that just never seemed to go away. To me, it sounds precisely like the noise a loose nut or washer would make if it were spinning freely and the air were making it rattle/vibrate.

Why haven't I fixed this before now you ask? Well, first, I didn't install the shifter myself so I'm not intimately familiar with the process; and second, it was neither tremendously loud nor especially annoying, so I left it as it was.

The reason I'm looking to fix this issue at this time, however, is because I plan on replacing the Pro 5.0 with an MGW (I'm just very tired of all the rattles in general and the extremely notchey shifts) and I figure I might as well attempt to solve the original mysterious noise while I'm down there.

Any thoughts as to what I should keep my eyes peeled for? Does this sound like the case of a missing bearing/washer/etc., or a loose something or another?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

translation = shifter is being replaced and
you would like to find a mysterious rattle
coming from somewhere else, while you're
under the car.

well check out the exhaust TSB and there
is also a TSB for the bell housing spacer
plate. those would be good things to
consider.

Haha, I do tend to get a bit wordy (I'm an English teacher); thanks for the translation!

I'm fairly certain that it's not the exhaust, but I'll definitely check out the bell housing spacer. Thanks!

ink, i am experiencing something simliar. I have had my mgw installed without issue for several months and then out of the blue now when i get up in the rpms i hear a rattle that sounds almost like a loose washer rattling. I dont believe its the shifter itself. it almost sounds like its coming from between the shifter and dash but its hard for me to put my head down there an listen while i am driving.

English teachers are supposed to be concise.

Anyway, there's also a TSB on the mid-pipes rattling just above the heat shields slightly forward of the tranny. A strap-type clamp is the prescribed fix.

Yeah mine started doing that after about 10k miles. The dealership put a worm clamp around those mid exhaust hangers to fix it. Sounded like loose washers around the shifter, sounded like crap!

But two other rattle points I ran into:
one was the pillar trim on the passenger door was not snapped all the way on at the dash, and the dash was rubbing against it slightly, causing a rattle. Sounded like the glovebox from the driver seat.
Another rattle sometimes occurs on the trim around my shifter (automatic though).

thanks for the replies everyone! the midpipe problem definitely sounds like a legitimate contender - i'll have to check that out.

and thanks for the tsb numbers hammeron!

so for the mid pipe rattle does it sound like its coming from inside the car or can you definately tell its under the floor?

Ford no longer advises the worm clamp on the exhaust, there is a new TSB out that recommends removing the exhaust hangers completely and just letting the pipes hang loose. I did the TSB myself using a angle grinder w/cutting wheel and a big pair of vice grips to twist the hanger out of the cross member once cut. This is to remedy the exhaust rattle around 1200 rpms. good luck
